been brought under fruit cultivation and fruit production has reached 10.28<br />

lakh MT. The state has favourable climatic conditions to produce a variety of<br />

fruits such as apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, mango, litchi, guava, strawberry<br />

and citrus fruits. For protection of horticulture crops from hailstorms, 15, 51,813 sq.<br />

meter area has been brought under anti-hail nets. The Horticulture Technology<br />

Mission is being implemented for the integrated development of horticulture.<br />

This Mission is based on the “End To End Approach” taking into account the<br />

entire gamut of horticulture development with all backward and forward<br />

linkages in a holistic manner. To ensure remunerative prices in apple, mango<br />

and citrus fruits produce to the farmers, state government has starting<br />

marketing intervention scheme.<br />

Roads<br />

Being a hilly state, the roads are very important and main mode of<br />

communication for the people. There were only 288 km of roads in the state at<br />

time of its formation in the year in 1948. The state government has constructed<br />

36,256 km of motorable road till December, 2016.<br />

"Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna” has shown remarkable progress in the<br />

state. “Mukhya Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna” has also been implemented to<br />

provide last mile connectivity to villages/habitations.<br />

Hydro-Power Generation<br />

Hydel-power potential is the key to prosperity of the state and out of the total<br />

available potential of 27,436 MW, the state has harnessed 10,351 MW power so<br />

far. Cent per cent electrification had been achieved in the state.<br />

Irrigation and Water Supply<br />

Water is an essential amenity for the development of any state. Irrigation facility<br />

for the agriculture and horticulture is being provided in the state. Out of the<br />

total 3.35 lakh hectare area that can be provided assured irrigation facility,<br />

2.69 lakh hectare area has been brought under irrigation schemes. Water<br />

treatment plants are being provided in all the drinking water supply schemes.<br />

Forestry<br />

Forest in Himachal Pradesh covers an area of 37, 033 sq. km which comes to<br />

66.52 per cent of the total geographical area of the state. The strategy of<br />

government in forestry management is conservation along with rational<br />

utilization and side by side expanding its base. Forest plantation is being carried<br />

out under productive forestry scheme and soil conservation schemes. A new<br />

scheme “Sub-Mission on Agro Forestry” was launched with the objective to<br />

increase tree plantation in an integrated manner along with crops and livestock<br />

to improve employment opportunities of small farmers. Wildlife and nature<br />

conservation schemes aim at improving the habitat and facilitating provisions
