hospital. The institute regularly organizes academic activities like CME<br />

programmes, workshops, seminars and guest lectures. The hospital of the<br />

institute provides clinical services to the patients from general and specialty<br />

OPDs for skin diseases, GIT and hepato-billiary disorders, neurological<br />

disorders, psychiatric and geriatric care.<br />

(v) National Institute of Siddha, Chennai: It offers 06 post-graduate courses in<br />

Siddha with intake capacity of 46 students, provides medical care and<br />

undertakes research to promote and propagate the Siddha system of<br />

medicine. A 160 bedded In-patient facility provide medical care in<br />

accordance with respective PG Departments. The institute organises two<br />

medical camps on every Saturday, one in rural area and the other in semiurban<br />

area to provide free medical facilities to promote the Siddha Medicine<br />

as well as community oriented approach to students.<br />

New Autonomous Institutes<br />

(i)<br />

All <strong>India</strong> Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi: It is conceived as an apex institute<br />

for Ayurveda with 200 bed referral hospital. The Institute offers postgraduate<br />

and Ph.D. courses in Ayurveda with intake capacity of 84 students<br />

in 18 post-graduate courses. OPD is already operational in the Institute.<br />

(ii) North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homeopathy, Shillong: The project<br />

consists of Ayurveda and homoeopathy colleges along with attached<br />

hospitals of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy with a capacity of 100 and 50<br />

beds respectively.<br />

Research in AYUSH<br />

The Government has set-up five autonomous research councils, namely, Central<br />

Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for<br />

Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN), Central Council for Research in<br />

Unani Medicines (CCRUM), Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS)<br />

and Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) with the mandate<br />

to under-take research in their respective system.Recently, for the management<br />

of diabetes mellitus, the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic<br />

Sciences(CCRAS) has developed a formulation namely, AYUSH-82 from 05<br />

Ayurvedic medicinal plants. The trials of the drug has shown significant<br />

reduction in blood sugar level along with clinical improvement. No toxic effects<br />

were noted during the trial. CCRAS has initiated action to commercialize<br />

AYUSH-82.<br />

In addition to its research work, the 81 institutes under the Council also<br />

provide healthcare facilities. The CCRH through its programme namely,<br />

Homoeopathy for Healthy Child enrolled 40,000 children with an aim to help<br />

them during dentition period and treatment of disease.
