Other Welfare Schemes<br />

Mid-Day Meal Scheme<br />

The Mid Day Meal Scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Human<br />

Resource Development. The scheme covers students of primary and upper<br />

primary classes in the government schools/schools aided by government<br />

and the schools run by local bodies. Foodgrains are supplied free of cost @<br />

100 grams for primary stage and @ 150 grams for upper primary stage per<br />

child per school day where cooked/processed hot meal is being served or 3<br />

kgs per student per month where raw foodgrains are distributed. During<br />

2016-17, 27.17 lakh tonnes of foodgrains comprising 22.96 lakh tonnes of rice<br />

and 4.21 lakh tonnes of wheat were allocated under the scheme.<br />

Wheat Based Nutrition Programme<br />

This scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child<br />

Development. The foodgrains allotted under it are utilized by the states/UTs<br />

under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme for providing<br />

nutritious/energy food to children in the age group of 0-6 years and<br />

expectant/lactating women. During 2016-17, 19.89 lakh tonnes of foodgrain<br />

comprising 9.62 lakh tonnes of rice and 10.27 lakh tonnes of wheat were<br />

allocated under the scheme. Besides, during the same period, a quantity of<br />

20,994 tonnes of maize and 19,489 tonnes of ragi was allocated under the<br />

scheme.<br />

Scheme for Adolescent Girls<br />

The Ministry of Women and Child Development administers the scheme at<br />

the central level. However foodgrains for the scheme are allotted by the<br />

Department of Food and Public Distribution at BPL rates to the Ministry of<br />

Women and Child Development. The SABLA scheme was launched in 2010<br />

by merging two schemes namely, Nutrition Programme and Adolescent<br />

Girls (NPAG) and Kishori Shakti Yojana (KSY) into a single scheme. The<br />

scheme aims at empowering adolescent girls of 11-18 years by improvement<br />

of their nutritional and health status and upgrading various skills useful to<br />

them. It also aims at equipping the girls on family welfare, health hygiene,<br />

etc. and guiding them on existing public services. The requirement of<br />

foodgrains under the scheme for nutrition is @ 100 grams of grains per<br />

beneficiary per day for 300 days in a year. During 2016-17, 2.70 lakh tonnes<br />

of foodgrains comprising 1.25 lakh tonnes of rice and 1.45 lakh tonnes of<br />

wheat were allocated under the scheme. Besides, during 2016-17, a quantity<br />

of 1,750 tonnes of maize and 1,100 tonnes of ragi was allotted to Government<br />

of Tamil Nadu under the scheme.
