Abstr<strong>ac</strong>t<br />
Several studies have showed that aging per se does not alter the cognitive<br />
functions. In this s<strong>en</strong>se, there are biologic, social and <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>tal<br />
determinant f<strong>ac</strong>tors. The rural resid<strong>en</strong>ce pl<strong>ac</strong>e has be<strong>en</strong> linked with life<br />
stiles, health status and cognitive function, however the evid<strong>en</strong>ce sci<strong>en</strong>tific<br />
are controversial. For this reason, the objective of this study was to<br />
determine the influ<strong>en</strong>ce of rural resid<strong>en</strong>ce pl<strong>ac</strong>e as risk f<strong>ac</strong>tor for mild<br />
cognitive impairm<strong>en</strong>t (MCI) in <strong>el</strong>derly subjects. A <strong>cr</strong>oss‐sectional and<br />
comparative study was carried out in a sample of 127 <strong>el</strong>derly, 44 with rural<br />
resid<strong>en</strong>ce pl<strong>ac</strong>e (Hidalgo, State, Mexico) and 87 urban resid<strong>en</strong>ce pl<strong>ac</strong>e<br />
(Mexico City) during 10 years or more. Cognitive functions were evaluated<br />
through the Mini M<strong>en</strong>tal State Examination. (MMSE) It was considered<br />
as cognitive deterioration wh<strong>en</strong> the score of MMSE was equal or lower than<br />
23 points. We found that average MMSE score for the <strong>el</strong>derly residing in<br />
the rural area was lower than that for <strong>el</strong>derly persons living in the urban<br />
area ( 24.7 ± 3.2 vs. 27.2 ± 2.5. p
