Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex disorder combining obesity,
dyslipidemia, and arterial hypertension, which affect of quality life and
affective status. MS is a primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes and
cardiovascular disease. Several studies have showed high prevalence of MS
in elderly, at the same time, it has been pointed out high percentage of
underdiagnosis of this disorder. This is due to the meaning about MS by
elderly population probably inadequate knowledge of this disease. For this
reason, of aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the
meaning of MS, and its relationship whit quality of life perception and
depression. A cross‐sectional study was carried out in a no probabilistic
sample of 93 elderly of Mexico City. MS was defined with the National
Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria.
Quality of life was measures across WHOQoL‐Bref and Geriatric
Depression Scale (GDS). We observed a prevalence of 47% of MS,
however almost half population self‐report to be healthy and the 100%
reported that they do not know, which is the meaning of Metabolic
Syndrome?. On the other hand, we did not find differences statistically
significant in the mean score of GDS and WHOQoL‐Bref in the group
with and without MS (p>0.05). Our results showed a high prevalence of
MS in Mexican elderly without any relationship with quality life and
depression, due probably to an inadequate meaning of this disorder of the
elderly people, because the promotion of health programs do not consider
the cultural aspects of the population and complexity of the MS.
