Annexes 203MethodsPopulationPAQUID is a prospective cohort study initiated in 1988 in South Western France (Dordogneand Gironde) to explore functional and cerebral aging. In brief, 3777 subjects who were 65years and older and were living at home at enrolment were included in the cohort if theyagreed, after being randomly selected on electoral rolls. They were extensively assessed atbaseline (V0) and then were followed up 6 times with a visit at 1 year (V1), 3 years (V3), 5years (V5), 8 years (V8), 10 years (V10) and 13 years (V13) (except at 1 year in Dordogne). At each visit a neuropsychological evaluation and a screening for dementia were carried out athome. A more detailed description of Paquid is given by Letenneur et al. [19] .Neuropsychological evaluationIn PAQUID, a battery of psychometric tests was used to quantitatively assess cognition. Inthis paper we focus the four tests which were systematically proposed at each visit:(i) the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) [5] is a sum-score evaluating variousdimensions of cognition (memory, calculation, orientation in space and time, language andword recognition). It is often used as an index of global cognitive performance and rangesfrom 0 to 30.(ii) the Isaacs Set Test (IST15) [10] shortened at 15 seconds evaluates semantic verbal fluencyabilities and speed of verbal production. Subjects have to give a list of words (with amaximum of 10) belonging to a specific semantic category in 15 seconds. Four semanticcategories were successively used (cities, fruits, animals and colours). The score ranges from0 to 40 [1].5
