Lars U. Wahlberg
M.D., Ph.D., Executive Vice President and COO.
Dr. Lars Wahlberg graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biophysics from University of Houston in 1980,
and an MD in 1985 from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas, USA and
trained in neurosurgery, neuroscience, and biomaterials at Brown University, USA and the Karolinska
Institute, Sweden leading to his specialty boards in neurosurgery and his Ph.D. He received additional
training in stereotactic neurosurgery from 1991 to 1992 at the Karolinska Hospital, Sweden, followed by a
chief resident position and faculty appointment in neurosurgery at Brown University, USA. Dr. Wahlberg
left Brown University in 1994 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. From 1994 to 1997, Dr. Wahlberg
served as Assistant Professor at Karolinska Institute, where he in addition to his clinical responsibilities
did basic and applied research on cell encapsulation and neural stem cells. Dr. Wahlberg joined Cyto-
Therapeutics, Inc. in 1997 to apply encapsulated and neural stem cells in neurosurgery. The cell encapsulation
technology was invented, developed and patented by Dr. Aebischer, Dr. Wahlberg, and colleagues
(while at Brown U.). In 1999, Dr. Wahlberg moved to Denmark and teamed up with Dr. Teit E. Johansen
and Prof. Anders Björklund to spin-off a new biotechnology company, NsGene A/S, dedicated to develop
cell- and gene-based therapies for neurological diseases. NsGene was established from a successful gene
therapy research program at NeuroSearch A/S. Dr. Wahlberg is the COO of NsGene and is responsible for
the R&D activities. In addition, Dr. Wahlberg is the coordinator of a recently awarded 2.9 million EU
grant surrounding the development of human dopaminergic neurons using neural stem cells and progenitors.
