- Price Waterhouse tabulates the ballots for
the annual OSCARS show. Over the years we
have attended several shows and mingled with
the stars. During his last appearance at the
show, John Wayne on arrival was surrounded by
a large crowd and Rose will always remember,
when she was getting his autograph, people
pushed her against the Duke who remained
standing like a rock, not moving an inch.
- As a director of the Canada California Chamber
of Commerce I met Ronald Reagan, who had
just retired to California, when I arranged to
have him introduce our luncheon speaker, the
visiting Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
- As a director of the LA German Chamber of
Commerce I met a few Berlin mayors who always
found a reason for a political boondoggle to visit
LA, which is a sister city of Berlin.
After retirement from PW in 1996, I remained
active in the accounting profession for eight
years as a member and chairman of the Administrative
Committee of the California Board of
Accountancy. This government agency is responsible
for the investigation and discipline of
CPA’s for violations of professional rules and
regulations.
Wilderness Beginnings
Rose, who grew up on Vancouver Island, spent a
few years researching and writing a book about
her parents who immigrated from Germany to
Canada in the 1920’s. “A story
of survival, Wilderness
Beginnings recounts the
adventures of the secondwave
of European immigrants
to Canada and their
adaptation of a new land.
Faced with natural disasters,
wild life, prejudice and
poverty, they shouldered on.” The book was
published in Canada in 1997 and is still available
in Germany on amazon.de.
Relaxation
Golf, my favorite pastime for many years has
enabled our family to travel to many countries
and created long-standing friendships. Since
1989, our son Mark and I have participated in
thirteen Annual Father & Son Taylormade Invitational
Golf Tournaments which have taken us
on trips to Ireland, Canada, Scotland, Spain,
Portugal, England, the Hawaiian Islands and many
other US states.

On these and other trips I have played hundreds
of courses, including seven of the twelve
top ranked golf courses in the world. Our California
climate allows me to play about three
days a week year-round. Rose also became an
accomplished golfer and we have been very
active at Oakmont Country Club where I was
president in 1996. Despite the periodic frustration,
golf builds character, patience, humility
and fitness, particularly when you walk carrying
your golf bag.
World Cup 94 in Los Angeles
Soccer is still my favorite spectator sport. During
the 1994 World Cup in Pasadena, I attended
six matches, including the final with Brazil
winning the shootout against Italy. Afterwards
we had a big party at our place – unfortunately
it was a sad event for some dozen German
friends who had traveled a long way, only to see
the German team lose already in the quarter
finals in New Jersey. The question of this year:
