excluded from the analysis. The market price of livestock includes costs of production including; household labour, equipment, additional feed and medicine. The private cost of livestock grazing on land is zero and the benefits of livestock accrue to owners each year until an animal declines in health and is consumed by the household, sold, or perishes through old age or wildlife predation. Subtracting the costs of human inputs from the value of the marketed outputs, we can estimate a lower bound value of the environmental inputs of livestock production. Forest products are available as a result of the plant and animal diversity of the Bale Mountains ecosystem and the services supporting them. Capital input is primarily household labour to harvest products. The value from the environment can be inferred from the current market value of the specific forest product gathered minus the cost of labour inputs. Data collection Research was undertaken in four villages (kebeles) over three districts (woredas), representing different altitudes and communities both inside and outside the Bale Mountains National Park (Fig. 1, Table 2). Data were collected through structured household questionnaires (de Vaus 2002) between April and July 2007 with households defined as ‘the people that normally eat and sleep under the same roof’ (Rowland and Gatward 2003). Annual crop yields, livestock sales, and the harvested forest products, both commercially traded and consumed, were gathered alongside demographic data. Respondents were principally household heads, sought due to their envisaged knowledge about the household economy, and respondents participated voluntarily with assurances of anonymity. questionnaires and focus groups were verbally administered in Oromo by trained enumerators. Every third household was approached and the nearest neighbour substituted if occupants were absent or unwilling to participate. In total, 195 households (Table 1) completed the questionnaire which was tailored to the study area through pre-pilot and pilot stages to add clarity, aid understanding, and reduce political and cultural sensitivities. <strong>Walia</strong>-<strong>Special</strong> <strong>Edition</strong> on the Bale Mountains 186

These explored the inputs of crop and livestock production including labour, access to markets and employment opportunities.
