As example 67 shows, ditransitives may be causativized in the same way as monotransitives,<br />

producing a four-argument verb.<br />

To summarize, verbs in all classes enter into causative constructions with maa-. Additional<br />

derivational processes when causativized: most verbs must be suffixed with the transitivizer –ii,<br />

<strong>and</strong> transitives require dative –nii to mark the additional object. With all verbs, the causer is<br />

marked as the A argument, <strong>and</strong> the causee as the O argument. Most <strong>of</strong> these facts are also true<br />

for the other causative construction in maq(a)-; the differences will be discussed in §5.4.1.2.<br />

5.4.1.2 Causative maq(a)-. Only a limited number <strong>of</strong> intransitive verbs, most having experiencer<br />

subjects <strong>and</strong> belonging to the semantic field <strong>of</strong> bodily sensations <strong>and</strong> emotions, may form a<br />

causative construction with maq(a)-. Examples are ‘make laugh/cry/urinate/fart/itchy/<br />

fearful/angry/stinky/happy’. Others that are closely related are maqastak ‘CAUS+grow=raise’;<br />

<strong>and</strong> maqasaanan ‘CAUS+sound=purr’. A few other lexicalized forms exist, including maqnii<br />

‘CAUS+die=kill’; maqlipni ‘CAUS+lightning= there is lightning’; maq#teq ‘CAUS+stay=leave<br />

something’; maqatlaxa ‘CAUS+lose= beat’; <strong>and</strong> maqatsanqa ‘CAUS+lacking=lose something’.<br />

<strong>The</strong> object marking <strong>of</strong> the causee is exactly the same as with the maa- causative construction.<br />
