In verbs normally causitivized by maqa-, the causation is understood to be indirect or<br />

unintentional; to indicate direct or intentional causation, the maa- . . .-ii construction is<br />

employed:<br />

75) maqa-xikswá ‘I make you asphyxiate” (indirectly, e.g., by making you laugh while<br />

you eat),<br />

vs. maa-xiksw-í ‘I asphyxiate you’ (directly).<br />

76) k-maqa-"tatá ‘I make you sleep (unintentionally, e.g., with a boring speech),<br />

vs. k-maa-"tatí ‘I put you to sleep’ (intentionally).<br />

5.4.1.3 Double causatives. It is possible to recursively causativize intransitive verbs in FM<br />

<strong>Totonac</strong>, as shown in the examples below:<br />
