2.3.6 Tap /$/. /$/ is a voiced alveolar tap that usually occurs intervocalically or word-initially. It<br />

was borrowed from Spanish <strong>and</strong> is now used in a very small number <strong>of</strong> morphemes, most <strong>of</strong><br />

them Spanish loanwords, but also in ideophonic sound adverbials <strong>and</strong> one verbal suffix. It is<br />

included in the subsection on sonorants because it has replaced or alternates with l in some cases,<br />

for example in the iterative suffix –pa!a, which is still –pala in other <strong>Totonac</strong> varieties such as<br />

Coatepec (McQuown 1990:183).<br />
