evidence of the use of ba‘adī in the meaning of beside<br />

me. Such arguments can only be put forth by<br />

righteous people who are enlightened with divine<br />

wisdom. They carry out a deep scrutiny and<br />

thorough investigation of the ahādīth with singular<br />

love and devotion. These devout lovers of the Holy<br />

Prophet sa made genuine efforts <strong>to</strong> find out the real<br />

motives and meanings of his sayings. It was, in fact,<br />

the result of this devoted pursuit that Hazrat Shāh<br />

Waliullāh succeeded in adducing the arguments he<br />

put forth above. 85<br />

In other words, in this particular hadīth, the word ba‘d has been<br />

used <strong>to</strong> point out a temporary absence. This is similar <strong>to</strong> the<br />

statement, “I am leaving for a few days. Please take care of my<br />

things after I’m gone.” Here, the word after does not mean after<br />

death. Instead, it means until I return or during my absence. In the<br />

same sense, the Holy Prophet sa said that he is leaving for Tabūk<br />

and until he returns, there will be no prophet in Medina.<br />

Hadīth Number 3 – There will be Khulafā’ right after me<br />

Hazrat Abū Hurairah ra narrates that the Prophet sa said, “The<br />

Israelites used <strong>to</strong> be ruled and guided by prophets. Whenever a<br />

prophet died, another would take over his place. There will be<br />

no prophet after me, but there will soon be Khulafā’ who will<br />
