8 <strong>With</strong> <strong>Love</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Muhammad</strong> sa the Khātam-un-Nabiyyīn<br />

<strong>Muhammad</strong> sa is the last prophet in absolute terms. The fact of<br />

the matter is that Farhan Khan does this <strong>to</strong> give the impression<br />

that the only possible meaning of khātam is the last.<br />

This chapter will challenge this impression that Farhan<br />

Khan tries <strong>to</strong> give by quoting three universally acknowledged<br />

dictionaries: Mufridāt Imām Rāghib, Lisān-ul-‘Arab, and Lane’s<br />

Lexicon. We present below a complete quotation from Mufridāt<br />

which thoroughly discusses the meanings of the word khātam.<br />

“The words al-Khatm and at-Tab‘ are used in two<br />

ways:<br />

1. The infinitive meaning of ‘I sealed’ or ‘I<br />

stamped,’ and this refers <strong>to</strong> the impressing of<br />

something on something ‏[تاثر]‏ like the stamp<br />

ring. ‏[‏ش]‏ of a seal or a<br />

2. And, second: The obtained impression ‏[الاثر]‏ of<br />

the stamp. [In other words, the word khatm can<br />

also be used for the impression itself]<br />

Sometimes, it figuratively means: s<strong>to</strong>pping from<br />

something. And this meaning has been given based<br />

on the fact that when books or chapters are sealed
