158 With Love to Muhammad sa the Khātam-un-Nabiyyīn
َ حَ‏ aااللهُ‏ َa ْ ْ ِa بِہٖ‏ َ a ا : َ اْ ہaٗ‎ َ
و
‏َذ
اِ‏ ‏َّاہ:‏ ا‎ اس ا‎م ‎۔
وح aحaوحا)‏ ٰ
‏َنً‏
اس دل ڈا‎۔
اُa aاہ َ :
ٰ ): He pointed towards it.
aاِ‏
He sent a messenger towards him ‏:ا َ ْ لَ‏
َa نْ‏ َa
ََّ
aو َ ْ َ ٰ حa ا ٍ َ َ : َِبaٗہ اa‏ُخْ‏ ‏ْہِ‏ ِ
َ ح aاِ‏
اِ‏
‏َو و : He spoke
‏ْہِ‏ aا
‏ْہa
‏َر
اار
َ‎ہِ‏ ُرa ولاٍ‏
‏ْرِہٖ‏
to him secretly, or he said something to him which
was kept hidden from another.
ا َ a بِہٖ‏ َa ْ
: َ اْ َ ہaٗ‎اِ‏
ْ ِa : Allāh revealed to him. He
و حَ‏ aااللهُ‏ َ
‏َذ
‏َّاہ
placed something in his heart.
This dictionary entry clearly shows that wahī and ilhām are
interchangeable words and should not be taken to mean
separate things. Furthermore, it is interesting to see what the
commentators have written about the following verse:
وَمَا كاَ‏ نَ‏ لِبَشرَ‏ ٍ اَنْ‏ يُّكلَ‏ ّ ‏ِمَهُ‏ ٰ اهللّ‏ ُ اِلاَّ‏ وَحْيًا اَوْ‏ مِنْ‏ وَّرَ‏ آىٴِ‏ حِجَابٍ‏ اَوْ‏
يُرْسِ‏ لَ‏ رَسُ‏ وْ‏ لاً‏ فَيُوْ‏ ىحِ‏ َ ابِِذْنِهٖ‏ مَا يَشَ‏ آءُ‏
ؕ اِنَّهٗ‏ عَلىِ‏ ٌّ حَكِيمْ‏ ۝ٌ
And it is not for a man that Allāh should speak to
him except by revelation or from behind a veil or by
sending a messenger to reveal by His command what
He pleases. Surely, He is High, Wise. 155
In Tafsīr Jalālayn, َ it is written regarding the word وح‏ٍا (by
revelation), “ ْامِ‏ aبِالاِ‏ aاو ‏,”‏aا‏َامِ‏ which means that wahī refers to
such communication of Allāh which is received through dreams
or by way of ilhām. In Tafsīr Jāmi‘-ul-Bayān, ‘Allāma Mu‘īn bin
