158 <strong>With</strong> <strong>Love</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Muhammad</strong> sa the Khātam-un-Nabiyyīn<br />

َ حَ‏ aااللهُ‏ َa ْ ْ ِa بِہٖ‏ َ a ا : َ اْ ہaٗ‎ َ<br />

و<br />

‏َذ<br />

اِ‏ ‏َّاہ:‏ ا‎ اس ا‎م ‎۔<br />

وح aحaوحا)‏ ٰ<br />

‏َنً‏<br />

اس دل ڈا‎۔<br />

اُa aاہ َ :<br />

ٰ ): He pointed <strong>to</strong>wards it.<br />

aاِ‏<br />

He sent a messenger <strong>to</strong>wards him ‏:ا َ ْ لَ‏<br />

َa نْ‏ َa<br />

ََّ<br />

aو َ ْ َ ٰ حa ا ٍ َ َ : َِبaٗہ اa‏ُخْ‏ ‏ْہِ‏ ِ<br />

َ ح aاِ‏<br />

اِ‏<br />

‏َو و : He spoke<br />

‏ْہِ‏ aا<br />

‏ْہa<br />

‏َر<br />

اار<br />

َ‎ہِ‏ ُرa ولاٍ‏<br />

‏ْرِہٖ‏<br />

<strong>to</strong> him secretly, or he said something <strong>to</strong> him which<br />

was kept hidden from another.<br />

ا َ a بِہٖ‏ َa ْ<br />

: َ اْ َ ہaٗ‎اِ‏<br />

ْ ِa : Allāh revealed <strong>to</strong> him. He<br />

و حَ‏ aااللهُ‏ َ<br />

‏َذ<br />

‏َّاہ<br />

placed something in his heart.<br />

This dictionary entry clearly shows that wahī and ilhām are<br />

interchangeable words and should not be taken <strong>to</strong> mean<br />

separate things. Furthermore, it is interesting <strong>to</strong> see what the<br />

commenta<strong>to</strong>rs have written about the following verse:<br />

وَمَا كاَ‏ نَ‏ لِبَشرَ‏ ٍ اَنْ‏ يُّكلَ‏ ّ ‏ِمَهُ‏ ٰ اهللّ‏ ُ اِلاَّ‏ وَحْيًا اَوْ‏ مِنْ‏ وَّرَ‏ آىٴِ‏ حِجَابٍ‏ اَوْ‏<br />

يُرْسِ‏ لَ‏ رَسُ‏ وْ‏ لاً‏ فَيُوْ‏ ىحِ‏ َ ابِِذْنِهٖ‏ مَا يَشَ‏ آءُ‏<br />

ؕ اِنَّهٗ‏ عَلىِ‏ ٌّ حَكِيمْ‏ ۝ٌ<br />

And it is not for a man that Allāh should speak <strong>to</strong><br />

him except by revelation or from behind a veil or by<br />

sending a messenger <strong>to</strong> reveal by His command what<br />

He pleases. Surely, He is High, Wise. 155<br />

In Tafsīr Jalālayn, َ it is written regarding the word وح‏ٍا (by<br />

revelation), “ ْامِ‏ aبِالاِ‏ aاو ‏,”‏aا‏َامِ‏ which means that wahī refers <strong>to</strong><br />

such communication of Allāh which is received through dreams<br />

or by way of ilhām. In Tafsīr Jāmi‘-ul-Bayān, ‘Allāma Mu‘īn bin<br />
