Examples of Khātam used in other contexts 45<br />

In the above hadīth, the Holy Prophet <strong>Muhammad</strong> sa declares<br />

that he is superior <strong>to</strong> the earlier prophets because he is their<br />

Khātam! No one can deny that the Holy Prophet sa considered his<br />

Khatamiyyat (being the seal) as his Fadhīlat [i.e., superiority]! This<br />

is factual proof that the Holy Prophet <strong>Muhammad</strong> sa also used<br />

the word khātam <strong>to</strong> idiomatically mean “best” and this<br />

precedent is the reason why this word was continuously used<br />

over the centuries <strong>to</strong> mean “best.” There are countless examples<br />

of this usage in Arabic literature. Hence, the Ahmadiyya Muslim<br />

understanding of the word khātam is contemporary <strong>to</strong> the Holy<br />

Prophet <strong>Muhammad</strong> sa , not contemporary <strong>to</strong> Farhan Khan!<br />

Furthermore, Farhan Khan says that the mufassirūn<br />

followed the Usūl-ut-Tafsīr [Principles of commentary of the<br />

Holy Qur’ān] by commonly referring <strong>to</strong> pure Arabic poetry and<br />

literature <strong>to</strong> understand the meanings of Qur’ānic words. Let us<br />

see how the mufassirūn themselves unders<strong>to</strong>od the word khātam.<br />

Hazrat Imām Rāzī, one of the greatest mufassirūn in the his<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

of Islām and a very well-acknowledged authority on Tafsīr-ul-<br />

Qur’ān [i.e., commentary of the Qur’ān], writes:<br />

aاحاۃa aو aاوجود aالاربۃ aباخع aازوا aادرجۃ aذہ د<br />

وادرۃaوaالaالaخاتمaال۔aوaاخاتمaجبaانa<br />

ونaالaالاaتریaانaرواaaااللهaہaوaمa<br />

ا aان aخاتم aابن aان aال aالاباء<br />

اوۃaوaامaوaالاانaاaانaخاتمaاخواتa<br />
