The policy of the Divisional Board with regard to admission<br />

with advanced standing is set out in the following<br />

regulations:<br />

1. General<br />

1.1 The Board will take into account the following when<br />

considering applications for admission with advanced<br />

standing:<br />

(a) a student should be brought on to a standard<br />

program as soon as possible after entry into the<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> sector of the University.<br />

(b) students who have passed a particular level of a<br />

similar program at a different institution may be<br />

admitted to the standard program at the next<br />

successive year level, possibly with a small amount<br />

of additional program work being required.<br />

(c) admission with advanced standing may be granted<br />

on the basis of relevant industrial experience.<br />

1.2 To qualify for an undergraduate award in the Division<br />

of Science, Engineering and Design, a student must<br />

complete as a minimum, an equivalent full-time year in<br />

the Division.<br />

1.3 For all graduate diploma programs offered by the<br />

Division of Science, Engineering and Design, a student<br />

must normally complete at least fifty per cent of the<br />

prescribed total time for the particular program in<br />

which they have enrolled at <strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />

2. Application<br />

2.1 In applying this policy the Board will follow these<br />

pidelines:<br />

(a) normally admission with advanced standing is only<br />

approved at the beginning of a program of study.<br />

(b) admission with advanced standing will only apply to<br />

a specified program of study in the <strong>Higher</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong> sector of the University.<br />

(c) admission with advanced standing will only be valid<br />

for a particular program and syllabus and only for<br />

the duration of such . program - or syllabus.<br />

2.2 To request admission with advanced standing, students<br />

entering a program will normally be required to register<br />

their intention to seek admission with advanced standing<br />

at the time of first enrolment, together with supporting<br />

documentation.<br />

Selection<br />

Selection is based primarily on academic merit as assessed by<br />

results achieved in Year 12 subjects, or their equivalent.<br />

Consideration will be given to the full range of an<br />

applicant's VCE studies and results, the level of performance<br />

in CATS in prerequisite studies and any other information<br />

available to the Selection Officer.<br />

Applied Science<br />

As standard entry requirements vary between each Applied<br />

Science program, refer to individual program entries in this<br />

<strong>Handbook</strong>.<br />

Engineering<br />

To be eligible for consideration for standard entry, you<br />

must have satisfactorily completed your VCE or equivalent<br />

in the following subjects (an average of Grade D or better is<br />

required):<br />

Prerequisites Units 3 and 4: English, Mathematical Methods,<br />

and one of: Physics, Chemistzy, Biology, Specialist<br />

Mathematics, Information Technology (Information<br />

Systems) or Psychology.<br />

Associate diploma entry<br />

Persons who have completed an associate diploma with very<br />

good results may be eligible for credit of one year or more<br />

in the degree program. All applications will be considered<br />

individually.<br />

Design<br />

Graphic Design<br />

To be eligible for consideration, you must have satisfactorily<br />

completed your VCE or equivalent in the following<br />

subjects:<br />

Prerequisite: A grade average of at least C in English<br />

Note: Applicants are advised to undertake Art or any art<br />

related study in Units 3 & 4.<br />

Industrial Design<br />

To be eligible for consideration, you must have satisfactorily<br />

completed your VCE or equivalent in the following<br />

subjects:<br />

Prerequisite: A grade average of at least C in English.<br />

Note: Applicants are advised to satisfactorily complete a<br />

minimum of two units of Mathematics (any), and as many<br />

subjects as possible from the following: Science, Materials<br />

and Technology, Technological Design and Development,<br />

Art Graphic Communication<br />

(The folio should include three-dimensional models.<br />

technical drawings, renderings, photographs and sketches,<br />

includin development back-up work and other written<br />

work. I B a folio is not available or incomplete, a short test<br />

may be given.)<br />

Special requirements<br />

All Design applicants, including those from interstate and<br />

overseas, must participate in a preselection program and<br />

attend an interview and folio presentation in December if<br />

required. This program requires applicants to submit copies<br />

of slides of work and a written response to questions.<br />

Applicants required for interview should bring a folio of<br />

their own work which indicates a preparation and ability to<br />

undertake this program and be able to demonstrate an<br />

awareness of the program content and career opportunities.<br />

All applicants who specify either graphic design or industrial<br />

design must follow carefully the procedure for application<br />

which is given with dates and other details in the Victorian<br />

Tertiary Admissions Centre publication, Guide to Courses in<br />

Colleges and Universities.<br />

All applicants without resident status must apply direct to<br />

the International Student Unit.<br />

All applicants must be able to attend for interview, if<br />

required, in December.<br />
