Obj ves and Content<br />

This subject continues expansion of students' knowledge of<br />

spoken and written Japanese. Emphasis is placed on analysis<br />

of factors which determine selection of speech registers<br />

Objech'ves and Content<br />

This subject consolidates all language skills acquired in<br />

previous stages of the Advanced Japanese major. Three<br />

modules (for instance 'Dietary Life in Japan', '<strong>Education</strong> in<br />

Japan' and similar) form the basis for extensive reading of<br />

reference literature, writing of reports in Japanese and oral<br />

class presentation in Japanese. Students will spend<br />

approximately sixty-six hours per semester in class and the<br />

remaining 18 hours conducting field work among the<br />

Japanese community in Melbourne. Classwork will be<br />

utilised for reading of reference material, lectures by<br />

specialists in the particular research area (Japanese) and<br />

discussion/debates of the field work findings (in Japanese).<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This subject deals with a number of issues pertaining to<br />

contemporary Japan which students study through reading<br />

of relevant newspaper articles in Japanese and discussion.<br />

Japanese language is used exclusively in class.<br />

Obiectives and Content<br />

This subject is focused on development of spoken language<br />

suitable for interaction with Japanese customers/clients in a<br />

variety of service situations. Emphasis is placed on training<br />

in appropriate honorifics. A mandatory 'work experience'<br />

component is included in the course. Students are placed in<br />

hotels, souvenir shops and similar venues and their<br />

performance in the work situation is assessed by the 'work<br />

experience' provider.<br />
