Course objectives<br />

The objective of this program is to provide advanced study<br />

in the discipline of information systems. This includes:<br />

an examination of the issues and directions in<br />

information technology<br />

the development of analytical and managerial skills to<br />

manage these issues and directions of IT<br />

the provision of a contextual framework which<br />

facilitates appropriate selection and effective use of<br />

advanced techniques.<br />

acquisition of advanced skills in the application of<br />

systems development tools and methods<br />

Two streams address the demand for advanced skills:<br />

IT Management - the effective management of<br />

information technology for strategic advantage<br />

IS Development - the awareness of and ability to utilise<br />

advanced technologies and methodologies for the<br />

implementation of information technology.<br />

This course will meet the needs of applicants who wish to<br />

pursue advanced studies in IS with the aim of enhancing<br />

their career opportunities through the development of<br />

managerial or technical skills.<br />

Duration<br />

The course takes two years full-time or four years part-time<br />

study.<br />

3 Course structure<br />

Stage 1<br />

i$ An approved sequence of subjects from the Graduate<br />

w Diploma of IS may be taken at Stage 1 to meet the<br />

2. prerequisite requirements for either the IS Development<br />

W stream or the IT Management stream in Stage 2.<br />

Progression to Stage 2 will be dependent on students<br />

$ achieving a satisfactory standard (normally a credit average)<br />

W Stage 2<br />

Stage 2 comprises eight subjects which may be primarily<br />

technical or management in nature. Students will<br />

nominate to take either the IS Development Stream or the<br />

o IT Management Stream. Six subjects will be taken from<br />

the nominated stream with the two remaining elective<br />

subjects taken from either stream or other approved<br />

2 subjects. Alternatively, students who meet suitable criteria<br />

may take a minor thesis, equivalent to four subjects, in<br />

either stream. Note that the IT Management Stream is<br />

unsuitable for students who do not have some relevant<br />

business experience.<br />

IS Development Stream<br />

Stage 1<br />

Graduate Diploma of Information Systems including<br />

specific subjects determined by the prerequisites for the<br />

Stage 2 subjects. Currently the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Information Systems would have to include the following<br />

subjects:<br />

BT560 Information Analysis<br />

BT576 Database Management Systems 1<br />

OR<br />

Equivalent knowledge gained through previous education<br />

and experience. An additional bridging program of study<br />

will be prescribed that ensures students have the necessary<br />

knowledge, equivalent to the above, to proceed to Stage 2.<br />

IT Management Stream<br />

Note that the IT Management Stream is unsuitable for<br />

students who do not have some relevant business<br />

experience.<br />

Stage 1<br />

Graduate Diploma of Information Systems including<br />

specific subjects determined by the prerequisites for the<br />

Stage 2 subjects. Currently the GradDipInfSys would have<br />

to include the following subjects:<br />

BT560 Information Analysis<br />

BT573 Information Technology Strategies<br />

OR<br />

Equivalent knowledge gained through previous education<br />

and experience. An additional program of study will be<br />

prescribed that ensures students have the necessary<br />

knowledge, equivalent to the above, to proceed to Stage 2.<br />

For applicants with substantial relevant business<br />

experience, this will comprise at least BT638 Business<br />

Analysis plus one other subject.<br />
