Recent studies have concluded that family businesses are<br />

fundamentally different from non-family businesses, having<br />

a number of unique problems, particularly in the areas of<br />

succession issues, dynastic tenslons and funding of growth.<br />

These issues, of considerable importance to those<br />

concerned with family businesses, have not previously<br />

been covered in depth in the existing suite of innovation<br />

and enterprise programs.<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

A tertiary qualification would be an advantage. However,<br />

persons without formal qualifications who demonstrate<br />

that they can apply appropriate discipline and commitment<br />

to a task, role or project requiring skills in the area of the<br />

management of family businesses may be admitted to the<br />

program at the considered discretion of the selection<br />

committee.<br />

Housing Management and<br />

Policy<br />

This course is designed for people working in the public<br />

and community housing sector and related industries such<br />

as real estate and property development. It is a distance<br />

eduction course and therefore available to students<br />

Australia wide.<br />

Course objectives<br />

The objective of the course is to provide people working in<br />

the housing industry with the practical and conceptual<br />

skills necessary for management, administration and policy<br />

development in housing provision. The content of the<br />

course is thus split between knowledge of housing issues<br />

and skills in administration, management, research and<br />

policy.<br />

The formal objects of the course are:<br />

to provide knowledge of, and experience in the analysis<br />

of, Australia's housing system and the social and<br />

economic problems that characterise the system;<br />

to provide broad problem solving, organisational and<br />

management skills in a range of housing areas;<br />

to develop a client based management culture in public<br />

and community housing delivery.<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

Applicants should have at least five years appropriate work<br />

experience in housing management, and administration, or<br />

in a related area such as social and community sector<br />

employment. Applicants without work experience are also<br />

eligible if they have an appropriate degree such as Arts,<br />

Social Science, Business or Planning. Potential participants<br />

can apply in two ways: they can be sponsored by their<br />

employees such as a State Housing Authority or they can<br />

pay themselves. Participants who are sponsored by State<br />

Housing Authorities will be chosen in cooperation with<br />

these authorities in order to ensure students meet the<br />

professional needs of the organisation. The same<br />

application form is used for sponsored and self-funded<br />

applications.<br />

Course structure<br />

The course consists of four subjects taken over two years<br />

part-time (one subject per semester). Five subjects are<br />

offered, three of which are compulsory (AS485, AS486,<br />

AS487) and two of which are electives (AS488, AS489).<br />

Information Systems<br />

This course is equivalent to one semester of full-time study<br />

or two semesters part-time. There are options which are<br />

relevant to people without any computing experience and<br />

to those with substantial computing experience.<br />

Course objectives<br />

To widen the opportunities for access and participation<br />

in the tertiary education system of those currently<br />

employed in the business sector;<br />

to provide a re-entry to tertiary study for graduates<br />

who, for whatever reason, would benefit from a more<br />

supportive learning environment;<br />
