Content<br />

The course begins by reviewing key concepts and strategies<br />

in community health early identification, treatment, disease<br />

prevention, health promotion.<br />

After considering significant historical developments in the<br />

area of health education, the following topics will be treated<br />

social, cultural and psychological factors involved in<br />

health promotion and disease prevention behaviours;<br />

health promotion programs, opportunities and<br />

responsibilities for environmental health officers;<br />

health promotion strategies and techniques for<br />

environmental health officers;<br />

instructional techniques and communication skills for<br />

health educators;<br />

needs Assessment: techniques;<br />

program evaluation strategies, performance indicators;<br />

public health plans.<br />

SC653 Process Chemistry<br />

This is a fourth year subject in the Bachelor of Applied<br />

Content<br />

Extraction of metals free energy relationships applied to<br />

metal extraction; thermodynamic basis of free energy<br />

relationships.<br />

Pyrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metals<br />

from their ores.<br />

Explanation of various aspects of these processes in terms of<br />

free energy relationships.<br />

Catalysis and selected chemical processes catalysts used in<br />

the large-scale industrial production of organic chemicals.<br />

The concepts of organometallic chemistry to a level<br />

sufficient to allow an understanding of the design,<br />

preparation and mechanisms of such catalysts will be<br />

-. presented. Students will also work in groups to prepare a<br />

written report on a selected catalytic process.<br />

0 Treatment of industrial wastes control and treatment of<br />

3. industrial waste. The Environmental Protection Act and its<br />

administration. Types, source and effect of pollution with<br />

regard to natural ecosystems and human health. Disposal of<br />

domestic and industrial wastes, including microbiological<br />

bases physico-chemical and other methods. Hazardous and<br />

intractable wastes.<br />

Analysis and identification of polymers; differential thermal<br />

analisis; gel permeation chromatography; polymer<br />

appplications of infrared and NMR spectroscopy; pyrolysis<br />

gas chromatography.<br />

The application of HPLC to the analysis of small molecules,<br />

amino acids, polymers, peptides and proteins.<br />

Structure of antibodies. Antigens and the immune response.<br />

Production of antibodies - polyclonal and monoclonal.<br />

Immunoassays -types and examples. Immunochemical<br />

techniques.<br />

SC660 Practical Chemistry<br />

SC661 Environmental Analysis and Control<br />

7.5 credit points 4 hours per week Hawthorn<br />

Prerequisite: SC468 Environmental Science Assessment:<br />

examination/assignmenN'practical work.<br />

This is a fourth year subject in the Bachelor of Applied<br />

Science (Environmental Health).<br />

Objectives<br />

To study specific analytical methods for the analysis of<br />

environmental samples;<br />

to study engineering processes and environmental<br />

control.<br />

Content<br />

Analysis:<br />

Review of analytical methods as applied to environmental<br />

analytes. Covers compleximetric, acid-base, chromatographic,<br />

electrochemical and spectrochernical techniques.<br />

Practical work:<br />

Related to these techniques.<br />

Control:<br />

Use of process flow diagrams. Simple process calculations<br />

(stoichiometry, combustion, heat and mass balances).<br />

Disposal and dispersal of pollutants - air, water and land<br />

pollution. Current issues acid rain, greenhouse effect, ozone<br />

depletion, photo chemical pollution.<br />

Case studies/field trips.<br />
