If a student elects not to sit for a Supplementary<br />

Examination the SUP results will be changed to an<br />

N after the Supplementary Examination.<br />

Subjects offered by the other Divisions will be<br />

bound by the rules of those teaching Divisions.<br />

1.3 Standards of progress<br />

All full-time and part-time students enrolled in<br />

undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the<br />

Division of Science, Engineering and Design are<br />

expected to maintain a minimum academic standard to<br />

be allowed to continue their studies. Unless otherwise<br />

specified these standards of progress apply to both<br />

undergraduate and postgraduate students.<br />

Progress requirements<br />

Full-time and part-time students are not permitted to<br />

enrol for a later year subject unless they have completed<br />

or are concurrently completing all outstanding subjects<br />

of the prior year.<br />

Standard enrolment load<br />

All full-time students are expected to enrol in, and<br />

remain enrolled in a full-time load in each semester.<br />

All part-time students are expected to enrol in, and<br />

remain enrolled in. a minimum of two subiects each<br />

semester for the duration of the course.<br />

Variations to the standard enrolment load will onlv be<br />

permitted in, exceptional circumstances, and will<br />

normally be varied for one semester only.<br />

Unsatisfactory academic progress<br />

Applied Science and Engineering<br />

The academic progress of a student will be considered to<br />

be unsatisfactory in any of the following circumstances:<br />

Fifty per cent or more of the enrolled student<br />

load is failed in a semester;<br />

a repeated subject is failed.<br />

Design<br />

The academic progress of a student may be considered to<br />

be . unsatisfactory if in an academic year they fail any<br />

.<br />

subject.<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> degree students<br />

Students enrolled in a Master by Research or Doctor of<br />

Philosophy are governed by progress rules detailed in<br />

the University Statutes.<br />

Procedures<br />

The procedure for considering students whose academic<br />

progress is unsatisfactory in the Division of Science,<br />

Engineering and Design is as follows:<br />

Letter of appeal<br />

Students who have not achieved the required standard of<br />

progress will receive a letter advising them that unless<br />

they can account for their unsatisfactory performance<br />

they will no longer be permitted to study in the<br />

Division for a period of two years. Such students are<br />

entitled to make application in writing to the Progress<br />

Review Committee, within five working days from the<br />

date of the letter. They will not be permitted to re-enrol<br />

until the outcome of their application is known.<br />

Students who do not submit a letter of application by<br />

the due date will be automatically excluded for a period<br />

of two years.<br />

No student will be excluded from the Division of<br />

Science, Engineering and Design without first having<br />

been granted an interview with the relevant Progress<br />

Review Committee<br />

Process of appeal<br />

Upon receipt of a written application from a student,<br />

the Chair and Secretary of the relevant Progress Review<br />

Committee, on behalf of the Committee, will review the<br />

contents of the letter and decide whether it will be<br />

necessary to interview the student.<br />

Additional information from appropriate academic staff<br />

about the student's academic work may be sought by<br />

the Progress Review Committee before a decision is<br />

made.<br />

Students will be advised in writing " whether their<br />

application has been accepted without interview, or<br />

whether an interview with the relevant Progress Review<br />

Committee is required.<br />

Powers<br />

After considering any application, the Progress Review<br />

Committee will take one of these courses of action:<br />

accept the student's application and allow the<br />

student to re-enrol without conditions;<br />

accept the student's application but place conditions<br />

upon the student's enrolment in the following<br />

semester:<br />

require the student to take leave of absence for a<br />

specified period: or<br />

exclude the student from the Division of Science,<br />

Engineering and Design for a period of two<br />

academic years.<br />

Enrolment conditions<br />

The academic record of students who have had<br />

conditions imposed will be reviewed by the relevant<br />

Progress Review Committee at the end of the following<br />

semester and a decision made to either:<br />

permit the student to continue studying without<br />

further conditiods; or<br />

impose further condition/s on the student for an<br />

additional semester; or<br />

require the student to present to the Committee the<br />

reasons why the student should not be excluded<br />

from the course for a period of two academic years.<br />

If these reasons are not accepted, then the student<br />

will be excluded for a period of two academic years.<br />

Appeals against decisions of Progress Review Committees<br />

The regulations for such appeals are contained in the<br />

University Student Assessment and Appeals Regulations<br />

(Refer to the chapter Procedures and Regulations in the<br />

<strong>Handbook</strong>).<br />

Period of exclusion<br />

Students who are excluded from any course in the<br />

Division of Science, Engineering and Design will not be<br />
