These are second year subjects in the Bachelor of Design<br />

Content<br />

Areas included in Studio Projects 2A design, methods of<br />

production and computer-aided design.<br />

Areas included in Studio Projects 2B photography,<br />

typography, drawing and illustration<br />

These subjects constitute a bridge between the formative<br />

studies undertaken in Studio Projects 1A and 1B and the<br />

applied studies of Studio Projects 3. The educational aim of<br />

Studio Projects 2A and 2B is to bring the student to a high<br />

standard of competence in the illustrative, symbolic,<br />

typographic, written and verbal presentation of ideas. These<br />

skills are used in the arrangement of sequential information<br />

embracing publishing, advertising, sales-promotion,<br />

merchandisine: " and public . relations, and also for noncommercial<br />

areas such as education and community<br />

organisations.<br />

GD221 Design History and Critical Theory<br />

20 credit points 3 hours per week, full year subject<br />

Prahran Assessment: continuous Prerequisites: GDIOI,<br />

GD102, GD111, GD120<br />

A second year subject in the Bachelor of Design(Graphic<br />

Design)<br />

Content<br />

In second year, History concentrates on developments in<br />

design, art and popular culture from Post World War 2 and<br />

International Modernism through to today and Post<br />

Modernism. Emphasis is placed on exploring the political,<br />

social and economic dimensions of design from within a<br />

framework of critical design theory; the aim being to<br />

3 encourage a critical discourse amongst students about design<br />

and its role in society.<br />

GD322 Print Technology<br />

Content<br />

This subject investigates the theory and application of<br />

modern print technology. It is not intended that this subject<br />

will go deeply into the electronics, mechanics or chemistry<br />

of printing, but rather explore the possibilities for design,<br />

production and distribution created by modern<br />

reproduction methods. These include type composition,<br />

photo-mechanical processes (offset, screen, letterpress and<br />

gravure), and studies of paper and other stocks.<br />

This course will include the economics of production and<br />

relate to sections of the course in business administration.<br />

Visits to production houses are also arranged.<br />

GD335 Design Culture<br />

20 credit points 3 hours per week, full year subject<br />

Prahran Prerequisite: GD201, GD202 and GD221<br />

Assessment: continuous<br />

A third year subject in the Bachelor of Design (Graphic<br />

Design) and Bachelor of Design (Honours) (Graphic Design)<br />

N.B. it is expected that for students to satisfactorily<br />

complete this subject, additional time will be required to<br />

visit galleries, exhibitions and performances.<br />

To facilitate a first-hand experience of art and design culture<br />

and the place it occupies within the functioning of our<br />

society.<br />

Content<br />

Various levels of cultural experience, encircling the personal,<br />

the professional and the academic, will be explored. Regular<br />

outLgs to exhibitions, performances, films, seminars aI;d<br />

public forums form a major component of the program.<br />

As part of the assessment students will create an experiential<br />

diary consisting of a combination of written and visual<br />

elements.<br />

GD410 Studio Projects 4A<br />

70 credit points 18 hours per week, full year subject<br />

Prahran Prerequisite: Credit level or above in GD301<br />

Studio Projects 3, GD335 and GD322 or GD303 Industrial<br />

Year, GD335 and GD322 Assessment: teaching staff and<br />

external design professionals convene to undertake assessment<br />

of this unit.<br />

A fourth year subject in the Bachelor of Design (Honours)<br />

(Graphic Design)<br />

N.B. additional work required outside scheduled hours,<br />

including evenings and weekends<br />

Content<br />

Working in a professional atmosphere, emphasis is given to<br />

developing the student's special capabilities through assigned<br />

professional projects or self-defined problems, culminating<br />

in a major design assignment.
