3 The National Korean Studies Centre was established with<br />

5 Commonwealth Government funding in 1990 as a joint<br />

2 venture of <strong>Swinburne</strong> University, La Trobe University,<br />

Monash University and the University of Melbourne. The<br />

g mission of the centre is:<br />

to develop and expand teaching, research and associated<br />

activities in Korean Studies, including language, culture,<br />

politics, law, business, education and other relevant<br />

disci~lines: . .<br />

a to enhance the Australian community's knowledge and<br />

understanding of Korea;<br />

a to support Australia's economic and other national<br />

development strategies.<br />

Building on existing teaching programs conducted in<br />

consortium member institutions, the Centre:<br />

fosters the design and delivery of vocationally and<br />

culturally relevant Korean languages and studies courses in<br />

all sectors of the Australian education system;<br />

fosters and undertakes high quality research relevant to<br />

Korean Studies and to Australia-Korea relations;<br />

promotes greater awareness and mutual awareness of all<br />

aspects of the Australia-Korea business and trade<br />

relationship;<br />

promotes student and staff exchanges between<br />

Australian and Korean universities.<br />

The Centre for Organisation and Strategic Studies (COSS)<br />

was established in 1996. The aim of this centre is to become<br />

a nationally and internationally recognised research centre<br />

of organisational and strategic studies. The centre aims to<br />

attract postgraduate research students of the highest calibre<br />

to facilitate visits from internationally respected fellow, to<br />

develop collaborative ventures with other research groups<br />

worldwide, to disseminate its research findings to both the<br />

academic and the broader community, and to maintain an<br />

ongoing colloquium program.<br />

The Centre for Psychological Services provides several<br />

major services to the wider community. These include<br />

personal counselling, psychotherapeutic programs,<br />

educational and training services and research consultancy,<br />

all of which are offered on a fee-for-service basis.<br />

The Centre is staffed by experienced psychologists<br />

associated with the School of Social and Behavioural<br />

Sciences, and enhances the teaching resources of the School<br />

by providing a facility for the professional training and<br />

education of graduate students.<br />

Initially the Centre has developed special services in:<br />

marriage and relationship counselling<br />

family therapy<br />

infertility counselling<br />

lifestyle management<br />

treatment of anxiety<br />

management of children and adolescents.<br />

The Centre accepts referrals from a wide range of other<br />

professionals and from both private and government<br />

sponsored agencies.<br />

Science <strong>Education</strong> Centre<br />

(The <strong>Swinburne</strong> Travelling Science Show)<br />

The <strong>Swinburne</strong> Travelling Science Show is the major<br />

activity of the Science <strong>Education</strong> Centre. The series of<br />

programs produced by the Show are designed to promote<br />

science and engineering among school students and the<br />

general public. The activities of The <strong>Swinburne</strong> Travelling<br />

Science Show include:<br />

school based programs for years prep to 10 designed to<br />

stimulate an interest in science and engineering;<br />

a community based program for promotion of <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

University to the wider community;<br />

support for the teaching of science in schools by the<br />

provision of in-service training and technical support<br />

materials.<br />

The centre also coordinates the Siemen's Science School and<br />

participates in events such as the ANZAAS Junior Science<br />

and Technology festival.
