The skills and knowledge acquired during the course are<br />

reinforced by several project subjects.<br />

Elective streams in the final year allow students to specialise<br />

in an area of interest. Students who wish to do so are also<br />

able to study several non-computing subjects.<br />

Career potential<br />

Graduates of the course are equipped with the knowledge<br />

and skills to make them valuable members of any team<br />

developing software. They will have extensive skills in<br />

software development, particularly relating to large scale<br />

projects, will have developed experience in working on team<br />

projects, and will have good oral and written<br />

communication skills.<br />

Employment prospects are excellent. Graduates usually<br />

start work as programmers, and can move into roles such as<br />

systems analyst, systems designer, project team leader or<br />

information technology manager. As computers play a<br />

crucial role in business and industry, there is a constant need<br />

for personnel with an in-depth understanding of computers<br />

and computer systems.<br />

Professional recognition<br />

The degree provides credit at Level 1 (the highest level)<br />

towards professional membership of the Australian<br />

Computer Society.<br />

Prerequisites (entrance <strong>1997</strong>)<br />

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed an<br />

appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, such as an<br />

interstate or international Year 12 qualification.<br />

VCE prerequisites: A grade average of D or higher in Units<br />

3 and 4 Mathematical Methods. A bonus is awarded to<br />

applicants who have successfully completed Information<br />

Technology: Information Systems and/or Specialist<br />

Mathematics.<br />

Industry Based Learning (IBL)<br />

Where possible, students undertake an optional paid<br />

industry based learning year, normally between their second<br />

and final vears. IBL com~lements the students' academic<br />

studies and gives them a real advantage in the graduate job<br />

market.<br />

Honours<br />

Students who achieve satisfactory results during the course<br />

may apply to undertake an additional year of study,<br />

enabling them to graduate with an honours degree.<br />

Credit transfer / ~athwavs<br />

Students admitted to the degree may be granted advanced<br />

standing for previous studies on a case-by-case basis.<br />

Students with excellent results in the first year of the course<br />

may be permitted to transfer to the Bachelor of Software<br />

Engineering, provided that they have selected Physics and<br />

Electronics as their first year elective subjects.<br />

Course structure<br />

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Applied Science<br />

(Computer Science and Software Engineering), students<br />

must accumulate a minimum of 300 credit points (100 credit<br />

points per full-time academic year). Students undertaking<br />

IBL accumulate 400 credit points and will be presented with<br />

an additional testamur indicating their successful completion<br />

of the IBL program. Five subjects will generally be taken<br />

during each academic semester, with a total of between 15 -<br />

17 hours per week contact time (including lectures, classes,<br />

tutorials and laboratory sessions). The typical student's<br />

average weekly workload during semester is expected to be<br />

50 hours.<br />
