Objectives and Content<br />

This subject runs over two semesters and highlights the<br />

development of Australian society, the economy and the<br />

effect of these developments on the natural environment.<br />

Within this framework the subject examines the role of<br />

government and the means that are used to achieve its<br />

economic objectives. The conflict between objectives and<br />

the consequences for the Australian population are stressed.<br />

The focus for study is on issues derived from these elements<br />

and their importance within the context of<br />

macroeconomics.<br />

Unit 2 of the subject develops and applies an understanding<br />

of microeconomics as well as macroeconomic concepts to a<br />

particular organisation or market within the economy. The<br />

case study approach will be based on an application of<br />

research skills to economic and social processes.<br />

AD1 04 Communication Skills<br />

This subject explores the nature of communication theory<br />

and the ways in which people can develop and apply their<br />

Explores the relationships between behaviour, personal<br />

identity, social roles, interpersonal relationships and social<br />

contexts. Considers the social and psychological dimensions<br />

v, of organisations including employment contexts.<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Familiarises students with the broad impact of information<br />

technology in the workplace. Instructs and assists students<br />

to use personal computers and to understand the basic<br />

applicants of a range of computer software. In the first<br />

semester, students will be introduced to operating systems<br />

and word processing and will develop basic competence in<br />

file management and word processing. In the second<br />

semester, word processing skills will be further developed<br />

and other kinds of applications (e.g. spreadsheets) will be<br />

introduced.<br />

AD1 08 Issues in Multicultural Australia<br />

Objecives and Content<br />

Explores the social impact of Australia's ethnically diverse<br />

population and explores the effects of cultural and linguistic<br />

differences on individuals' life chances. The subject will also<br />

cover the practical issues of dealing with members of the<br />

public and/or the workplace who may come from different<br />

cultural backgrounds.<br />

Language Other than English<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Students choosing to study a language other than English as<br />

an elective must undertake two semesters of study. The<br />

course of study assumes no prior knowledge of the language<br />

chosen. Both written and spoken language skills will be<br />

developed. The cultural dimensions of the language and its<br />

social context will be studied, especially in relation to its<br />

relevance in the workplace.<br />

AD1 1 1 Technology and Society<br />

3 hours pw week Hawthorn .Prerequisite: nil<br />

A subject in the Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Investigates the key concept of change in society with<br />

particular reference to explaining how and in what ways<br />

societies generate new technologies and adapt to their<br />

impact. Case study examples will be used to focus the study<br />

of technology.<br />

Obj ves and Content<br />

Examines the roles and functions of the major forms of mass<br />

media in Australian society. Particular emphasis is given to such<br />

factors as ownership and control of the media, mechanisms for<br />

media regulation and debates about the influence of mass media<br />

on individuals and social patterns.
