General Student Information<br />

Applications<br />

Applications, including special entry, later year entry and<br />

part-time, must be made through the Victorian Tertiary<br />

Admissions Centre (VTAC). Students studying at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> TAFE may apply directly by obtaining an<br />

application form from the Admissions and Examinations<br />

section of <strong>Swinburne</strong> University of Technology. Students<br />

enrolled in programs taught within the Division of<br />

Business, Humanities and Social Science may make<br />

application to transfer to other programs within the<br />

Division by completing an Application for Internal Course<br />

Transfw available from the Divisional office, Level 9 of the<br />

Business and Arts building.<br />

Standards of progress<br />

All full-time and-part time students enrolled in<br />

undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Division are<br />

expected to maintain a minimum academic standard to be<br />

allowed to continue their studies. Unless otherwise<br />

specified, these standards of progress apply to<br />

undergraduate and postgraduate students.<br />

Completion of first year of undergraduate<br />

p rog ra m<br />

Bachelor of Arts<br />

Full-time students are not normally permitted to enrol for<br />

second or third year subjects unless they have completed or<br />

are concurrently completing all outstanding core subjects.<br />

Where a student is enrolled for both first and second year<br />

subjects and wishes to withdraw from a subject, enrolment<br />

in first year subjects must be maintained. Part-time students<br />

may be permitted to complete a major sequence of study<br />

prior to first year electives providing permission is granted<br />

from the enrolment officer at the time of enrolment.<br />

Bachelor of Business<br />

Full-time and part-time students: requirements as for full-time<br />

students in the Bachelor of Arts.<br />

Standard Enrolment Load<br />

Bachelor of Arts<br />

All full-time stage one students are expected to enrol in,<br />

and remain enrolled in, four subjects per semester.<br />

All full-time stage two and three students are expected to<br />

enrol in, and remain enrolled in, three subjects per<br />

semester.<br />

All part-time students are expected to enrol in, and remain<br />

enrolled in, two subjects each semester for the duration of<br />

the course.<br />

Bachelor of Business<br />

Full-time students are expected to enrol in, and remain<br />

enrolled in, four subjects per semester.<br />

Part-time students are expected to enrol in, and remain<br />

enrolled in, two subjects per semester.<br />

Variations to the standard enrolment load will only be<br />

permitted in exceptional circumstances, and will normally<br />

be varied for one semester only.<br />

Overload<br />

Students will be permitted to enrol in one additional<br />

subject over the normal semester load if they have passed<br />

all enrolled subjects in the previous semester and it is the<br />

student's last semester of study. In exceptional<br />

outstanding results. Applications must be made in writing<br />

to the relevant course administrator before the scheduled<br />

re-enrolment period.<br />

In the case of more than one additional subject,<br />

applications, in writing, must be made to the Pro Vice-<br />

Chancellor at the time of pre-enrolment.<br />

To undertake less than the noml load: Applications<br />

should be made to the relevant Course Administrator<br />

before the scheduled re-enrolment period, clearly stating<br />

reasons for the request.<br />

Change of enrolment status<br />

Students wishing to change their enrolment status from<br />

full-time to part-time may do so at the end of any semester,<br />

and students should contact the relevant Course<br />

Administrator to amend enrolment. Change of status from<br />

part-time to full-time will be permitted at the end of each<br />

year at the time of re-enrolment into the following year.<br />

Part-time students wishing to study full-time in Semester 2<br />

of any year must apply in writing to the relevant course<br />

administrator before the beginning of Semester 2 and will<br />

only be permitted in exceptional circumstances.<br />

Time limit for completion of degree<br />

Full-time students must complete their degree program<br />

within six years of their first enrolment in the course<br />

(excluding any periods of leave of absence). Part-time<br />

students must complete their degree program within nine<br />

years of their first enrolment in the course (excluding any<br />

periods of leave of absence).<br />

Student-at-risk program<br />

Students who do not pass at least fifty per cent of their<br />

enrolled load in any semester will be identified as being 'at<br />

risk' and will be advised of their status by letter within one<br />

week of the publication of results each semester. Students<br />

will be given the opportunity to discuss the situation with<br />

a member of the Student Progress Review Committee.<br />

Attendance at these sessions is highly recommended, but<br />

not compulsory.<br />

The grades N, NA, NWD and PX will count as fail grades<br />

for the purpose of this section.<br />

Unsatisfactory academic progress<br />

The academic progress of a student will be considered to be<br />

unsatisfactory if:<br />

in the two most recent semesters in which the student<br />

was enrolled (excluding summer school), the student<br />
