Engineering<br />

A complete list of the sources of financial support and the<br />

various awards available to students is given in the general<br />

section of this <strong>Handbook</strong>. Brief information on awards most<br />

likely to be of interest to engineering students is given<br />

below.<br />

Entrance Scholarships<br />

Details of entrance scholarships available may be obtained<br />

from the Administrative Officer, telephone 9214 8456.<br />

Industry Based Learning scholarships<br />

The Division of Science, Engineering and Design, in<br />

conjunction with industry, offers industry based learning<br />

scholarships to the value of $8000 per annum to full-time<br />

engineering students in second and later years of their<br />

engineering degree course. Interested students should apply<br />

to the Divisional office by November for the forthcoming<br />

year.<br />

W.P. Brown Medal The award is a medal and a<br />

premium of $150. This is<br />

awarded by the Institution of<br />

Engineers, Australia, to the<br />

best all-round student in the<br />

final year of an engineering<br />

course.<br />

Esso Prize<br />

A prize of $500 awarded<br />

annually to the outstanding<br />

final-year mechanical<br />

engineering student.<br />

F.W. Green Memorial Books to the value of $50 are<br />

awarded to the most<br />

outstanding final-year<br />

engineering student graduating<br />

each year.<br />

James Smith Memorial Books to the value of<br />

Prize<br />

approximately $50 are<br />

awarded to the best student in<br />

structural design in the final<br />

year of the civil engineering<br />

Harold E.R. Steele A prize of $100 is awarded to<br />

A silver medal and a prize of<br />

$300 are awarded to the<br />

student in the final year of the<br />

manufacturing engineering<br />

degree, undertaking major<br />

studies in chemical<br />

engineering, who submits the<br />

best project thesis.<br />

Value - up to $400 per year<br />

and tenable for a period not<br />

exceeding five years.<br />

Applicants for these awards<br />

must be qualified to enter the<br />

second or later year of an<br />

engineering degree course to<br />

be accepted as a candidate for<br />

the degree of Master.<br />

A colour television is awarded<br />

to the student with the best<br />

final year project in the<br />

Degree of Bachelor of<br />

Engineering (Electrical).<br />

The Commonwealth<br />

Department of <strong>Education</strong><br />

provides awards for full-time<br />

research leading to the degree<br />

of Master. The closing date for<br />

applications is 31 October in<br />

any year.<br />

Some industrial organisations also make available awards<br />

for full-time research leading to the degree of Master.<br />

Further information may be obtained from the Head of<br />

each engineering school.<br />

Professional recognition of courses<br />

The Institution of Engineers, Australia<br />

The courses for degree of Bachelor of Engineering, in civil,<br />

electrical power and control, communication and electronic,<br />

computer systems, manufacturing, and mechanical<br />

engineering, have all received recognition by The Institution<br />

of Engineers, Australia, as satisfying academic requirements<br />

for corporate membership.<br />

Students who are enrolled for engineering courses at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> and are at least seventeen years of age may apply<br />

to the Institution of Engineers, Australia, to become student<br />

members. Application forms are available from engineering<br />

school offices and the Divisional office.<br />

Other professional bodies<br />

The course for the Bachelor of Engineering Manufacturing)<br />

is recognised by the Institution of Production Engineers and<br />

the degree in electrical engineering is recognised by the<br />

Institution of Radio and Electronics Engineers (Australia) as<br />

sufficient academic qualification for membership.<br />
