To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Arts (Media<br />

and Communications), students must complete at least two<br />

majors (one of which must be Media Studies) plus a<br />

number of electives. A major is a three-stage sequence of<br />

study in the one discipline or specialisation.<br />

The Media Studies major includes the following:<br />

AM208 New Media: The Telecommunications<br />

Revolution<br />

AM209 Media Voices, Media Style: The Process of<br />

Stage 3<br />

AM300 Cinema Studies<br />

AM302 Radio Production and Criticism<br />

ALM310 Electronic Writing<br />

AM311 Information Society: A Global Perspective<br />

ALM312'* Media/Literature Project<br />

Students also choose a second major plus electives.<br />

* A second option for this subject is exclusive to Literature<br />

students, and involves an independent research project,<br />

conducted over a semester, under the supervision of a member<br />

of the Literature staff: Numbers will be limited, and students<br />

must have a proven, ongoing work in progress that will form<br />

the basis of their work. Eligibility for this program depends<br />

upon the student having a project on which they have been<br />

previously working (say, a book ofpoems, a novel, a critical<br />

essay), and which has been approved by the subject convenor.<br />

The subject is designed to develop a work to completion, and<br />

prepare, or at least submit it for publication. This work can be<br />

of a critical nature, and students are expected to work closely<br />

with a supervisor throughout the semester.<br />

Honours<br />

Outstanding Bachelor of Arts students have the option of<br />

undertaking a specialised fourth year of study, graduating<br />

with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree. The honours<br />

year is offered in the areas of Cultural Studies, Industry<br />

and Community Studies, Languages, Psychology and<br />

Social Sciences. This program provides students with an<br />

opportunity to enhance their research ability and permits<br />

further studies and specialisation in their major discipline<br />

of study.<br />

Diploma in Business (Office<br />

Administration)<br />

The Bachelor of Arts incorporating the Associate Diploma<br />

in Business (Office Administration) is an innovative and<br />

flexible course taken over four years of full time study and<br />

resulting in students gaining awards in both the Bachelor of<br />

Arts and the Associate Diploma.<br />

Students undertake subjects from the Associate Diploma<br />

run by the University's TAFE Division and undergraduate<br />

subjects taken from the Division of Business, Humanities<br />

and Social Science.<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Arts degree is characterised by its flexibility,<br />

variety and innovation. The Bachelor of Arts ~rovides a<br />

number of opportunities for students to enrich their<br />

studies, broaden their education and give themselves a<br />

better base from which to seek productive employment.<br />

The Bachelor of Arts incorporating the Associate Diploma<br />

in Business (Office Administration) is offered at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Hawthorn campus.<br />

Career potential<br />

Arts graduates find work in fields such as administration,<br />

personnel, publishing, public relations, media and research<br />

services. In the Bachelor of Arts incorporating the<br />

Associate Diploma in Business (Office Administration),<br />

students undertake a media studies major and further<br />

studies in office administration, creating greater<br />

opportunities of employability in the fields of<br />

administration and media.<br />

Course structure<br />

The Bachelor of Arts incorporating the Associate Diploma<br />

in Business (Office Administration) is a four-stage program<br />

divided into a number of semester subjects. The full time<br />

course is normally completed in four years, however on<br />

the completion of two and a half years of full time studies<br />

students may elect to take out the award of Associate<br />

Diploma and not continue with the Bachelor of Arts.<br />

In the first two years of the course, students will take one<br />

subject from the Bachelor of Arts and the remaining<br />

subjects from the Associate Diploma.<br />

In the first semester of the third year, final subjects from<br />

the Associate Diploma are completed along with a greater<br />

load from the Bachelor of Arts. For the remainder of the<br />

course students undertake only Bachelor of Arts subjects.<br />
