Exercises statutory functions under the Solicitors Acts 1954–2002 in<br />

relation to the education, admission, enrolment, discipline and regulation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the solicitors’ pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The Society works to improve access to the law<br />

generally and provides representation, services and support for solicitors<br />

themselves. The Society also deals with complaints from the public about<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession, and administers a statutory compensation fund.<br />

30 full-time law centres as well as several part-time legal aid clinics.<br />

Originally set up on an administrative basis in 1979, the Legal Aid Board was<br />
