Volunteer-based pr<strong>of</strong>essional organisation providing emergency response and<br />
community support services. The main programmes <strong>of</strong> activity undertaken<br />
by Civil Defence volunteers can broadly be described as casualty/first aid,<br />
rescue, fire fighting, welfare provision, radio communications, and radiation<br />
detection and monitoring. Civil Defence is administered locally by each local<br />
authority. Apart from training in the above activities, Civil Defence volunteers<br />
also respond to emergencies such as flooding and other crisis situations.<br />

Provider <strong>of</strong> social finance to community-based projects in Ireland, with<br />
<strong>of</strong>fices in Dublin, Cork and Westport. Clann Credo provides repayable finance<br />
to community and voluntary organisations and charities that find it difficult<br />
to access funding from mainstream financial institutions. It also provides<br />
training and mentoring to the sector. Support is primarily through loan<br />
finance and occasionally direct investment. All projects are evaluated on<br />
their potential to make a social as well as a financial return. Since 1996, over<br />
€17 million has been invested in more than 140 groups. Clann Credo has also<br />
provided support to organisations in Kosovo, Slovakia and South Africa.<br />
