<strong>National</strong> umbrella organisation for voluntary and non-statutory agencies<br />

which provide direct services to people with an intellectual disability.<br />

Members are voluntary and religious bodies that have a clear vision rooted<br />

in the respect for, and the dignity <strong>of</strong>, the person. It consists <strong>of</strong> 61 affiliates<br />

who provide approximately 80% <strong>of</strong> this country’s direct service provision<br />

for people with an intellectual disability. The objective <strong>of</strong> the Federation<br />

is to promote equality <strong>of</strong> opportunity for persons in the care <strong>of</strong> member<br />

organisations through the provision, maintenance and development <strong>of</strong><br />

appropriate high-quality services. This is achieved through information<br />

sharing and through the development and promotion <strong>of</strong> codes <strong>of</strong> best<br />

practice. The Federation also acts as a lobbying agent on a national and<br />

international basis and works in co-operation with advocacy organisations<br />

on behalf <strong>of</strong> persons with an intellectual disability.<br />
