Established to implement the terms <strong>of</strong> Data Protection Acts 1988 and 2003.<br />
The <strong>of</strong>fice aims to empower individuals to control the use <strong>of</strong> data relating to<br />
them. Ensures: respect for individuals’ privacy rights through the investigation<br />
<strong>of</strong> complaints; the empowerment <strong>of</strong> individuals by means <strong>of</strong> awareness<br />
raising; the enforcement <strong>of</strong> data controllers’ obligations as set out in the Data<br />
Protection Acts. The Commissioner maintains a register, available for public<br />
inspection, giving general details about the data handling practices <strong>of</strong> many<br />
important data controllers, such as government departments and financial<br />
institutions. The Commissioner also has a role to play in the enforcement<br />
<strong>of</strong> Electronic Communications Data Protection and Privacy Regulations on<br />
unsolicited direct marketing messages by electronic means.<br />
