Volk Fld (KVOK), WI<br />

1. CAUTION - ANG Combat Readiness Training Center with<br />

intensive jet training. High terrain within 5 NM. Transient<br />

facilities/service limited, available 1400-2200Z++ Monday-Friday<br />

except holidays, OT in support of National Guard Bureau<br />

validated flying. Do not overfly POL storage SW corner of airfield.<br />

2. CAUTION - Numerous wildlife hazards all year. Pilots should<br />

report all bird and mammal sightings to Base Operations, the<br />

Tower, the Supervisor of Flying, or Range Control Officer at<br />

Hardwood Range (R6904).<br />

(AFFSA/AFFSA)<br />

a. Bird Activity - Occasional concentrations of large and<br />

small birds on and in the vicinity of the airfield. During July and<br />

August heavy swallow and killdeer activity, also moderate Sandhill<br />

Crane, American Kestrel, and crow activity. During September<br />

through November and February through April, heavy<br />

miscellaneous migrating waterfowl to include Canadian geese and<br />

various cranes. Aircraft landing at Volk Fld (KVOK) contact<br />

Dispatcher on 372.2 or call DSN 871-1205, C608-427-1205 for<br />

current Bird Watch Condition. Aircraft utilizing any Volk Fld (KVOK)<br />

Airspace including R6904, contact "PHOENIX" on 346.25,<br />

Hardwood Range on 358.2 or call DSN 871-1445, C608-427-1445<br />

for current Bird Watch Condition.<br />

b. Mammal Activity - Deer activity on or near the airfield is a<br />

threat year round, but heaviest in September, October, and<br />

November. Base Operations will ensure runway checks are done<br />

before night landings or takeoffs due to increased activity around<br />

and after sunset.<br />

3. Bird Watch Condition Codes -<br />

a. SEVERE - High bird or mammal activity on or immediately<br />

above the active runway, on final approach, or other specific<br />

location representing high potential for strikes. Supervisors and<br />

aircrews must thoroughly evaluate mission need before<br />

conducting operations in areas under condition SEVERE.<br />

b. MODERATE - Increased bird or mammal activity in<br />

locations representing increased potential for strikes. Bird Watch<br />

Condition MODERATE requires increased vigilance by all agencies<br />

and supervisors and caution by aircrews.<br />

c. LOW - Normal bird or mammal activity on and around the<br />

airfield representing low potential for strikes<br />

(AFFSA/AFFSA)<br />

Westover ARB/Metropolitan (KCEF), MA<br />

1. Limited passenger services available. No drag chutes or<br />

repacking services. Simultaneous use of intersecting runways in<br />

effect. Limited transportation available 1300-2100Z++ weekdays,<br />

closed weekends and holidays. Billeting extremely limited, 48<br />

hour prior notice required for reservations.<br />

2. NOISE ABATEMENT - Heavy aircraft departing Rwy 33 turn<br />

right to 350° at 650’ MSL, unless directed otherwise by ATC. No<br />

practice approach for jet aircraft 0300-0400Z++, 1200-1700Z++<br />

Sunday, unless approved by 439 OG/CC only.<br />

3. C<strong>US</strong>TOMS - Reference Foreign Clearance Guide, North and<br />

South America, <strong>US</strong> Section V, Special Airport of Entry.<br />

4. AIRCRAFT SECURITY - <strong>The</strong> airfield has two designated<br />

security restricted areas. One consolidated C-5 restricted area.<br />

5. Any inbound aircraft carrying hazardous cargo will contact<br />

Base Operations on Pilot to Dispatcher 30 minutes prior to<br />

arrival.<br />

6. Uncontrolled vehicle traffic on E ramp and N ramps,<br />

Taxiways S and T.<br />

7. All transient SAAM, JA/ATT, heavy jet aircraft, JCS<br />

exercises, and tactical exercises will contact the 439 LRS/LGRR<br />

DSN 589-3318 to coordinate support requirements. XPN will<br />

arrange all required support. All other aircraft contact Base<br />

Operations DSN 589-2917.<br />

8. CAUTION - Numerous wildlife hazards. Pilots should report<br />

all bird or mammal sighting to Base Operations, Tower, or<br />

Supervisor of Flying.<br />

a. Bird Activity-Horned larks, killdeer and meadowlarks<br />

pose a significant hazard during the spring and summer months.<br />

Swallows extremely active during the month of August during the<br />

morning to early afternoon. Occasional concentrations of large and<br />

small birds on and in the vicinity of the airport. From the months of<br />

October-February, heavy crow activity during sunrise and sunset<br />

periods in and around the airport. Monitor ATIS or contact Pilot to<br />

Dispatcher for current Bird Watch Conditions.<br />

b. Mammal Activity-Deer, coyote and fox activity on or near<br />

the airfield is year round. Extreme caution should be used for<br />

landing or takeoff during the hours of darkness.<br />

c. Bird Watch Conditions are as follows:<br />

(1) LOW - Normal bird activity on and above the airfield<br />

with a low probability of hazard.<br />

(2) MODERATE - Increased bird population in locations<br />

which represents an increased potential for strike. Requires<br />

increased vigilance by all agencies and supervisors and caution by<br />

aircrews.<br />

(3) SEVERE - High bird population on or immediately<br />

above the active runway or other specific location that represents<br />

a high potential for strike. Supervisors and aircrews must<br />

thoroughly evaluate mission need before conducting operations<br />

in areas under condition SEVERE.<br />

d. BASH PHASES:<br />

(1) BASH Phase I - All months not designated as Phase<br />

II. Wildlife activity is generally LOW during these periods with the<br />

primary threat resulting from small species of birds such as<br />

mourning doves, starlings, kestrels, and horned larks.<br />

(AFFSA/AFFSA)<br />

(2) BASH PHASE II - In effect by NOTAM as determined<br />

by airfield surveillance and risk assessment, Phase II is most likely<br />

to occur in March-April and September-October. Bird activity<br />

may increase during these periods due to the presence of<br />

migratory waterfowl such as mallards and Canada geese. Short<br />

periods of MODERATE or SEVERE may occur during these<br />

periods.<br />

procedures and expeditious climb to assigned altitude are<br />
