2. BIRD WATCH - During migratory season (July-October),<br />

Canadian geese frequent the airfield. Blackbirds have been<br />

observed in very significant numbers migrating from roosts to<br />

feeding areas, especially during fall and spring. Numerous Red<br />

Tailed Kestrels/hawks seek prey on the airport year-round.<br />

3. Transient flight crew classified storage available in Base<br />

Operations for Secret and below. COMSEC issue available with<br />

24 hour prior notice to Base Operations.<br />

1. Deer activity on or near runways. Interior taxiway restricted<br />

to aircraft with less than 130’ wing span. If destination is ANG,<br />

Ops 302.3 prior to arrival. Contact Command Post prior to<br />

engine start for departure. Explosives prohibited. Expect light to<br />

moderate turbulence with downdrafts and wind shear on<br />

approach when wind velocity exceeds 15 knots. <strong>US</strong>AF useable<br />

taxiways at least 50’ wide.<br />

2. SERVICE - Fleet service available, call ahead.<br />

5. CAUTION - Bird/Wildlife Strike Hazard (BASH) Information:<br />

a. Wildlife hazards exist. Pilots should report all bird or<br />

mammal sightings to Command Post or Hammer Ops on<br />

Frequency 302.3.<br />

b. Phase I & II Bird Activity:<br />

(1) Phase I - All dates not designated as Phase II.<br />

(2) Phase II - In effect 01 March to 30 May and 1 August<br />

to 31 October.<br />

c. Bird Watch Condition - <strong>The</strong> following terminology will be<br />

used for rapid communication to disseminate bird activity<br />

information. Bird location should be given with the BWC code. As<br />

a guide, large birds are similar in size to waterfowl, raptors, gulls<br />

etc, while small birds are similar in size to terns, swallows, wrens<br />

etc.<br />

(1) SEVERE - Heavy concentration of birds (more than<br />

15 large birds or 30 small birds) near or above the<br />

runway/taxiways to include short final and departure corridors,<br />

and infield areas.<br />

(2) MODERATE - Concentration of birds (5 to 15 large<br />

birds or 15 to 29 small birds) near or above the runway/taxiways<br />

to include short final and departure corridors, and infield areas.<br />

(3) LOW - Normal bird activity near or above the airfield<br />

with a low probability of hazard.<br />

a. Bird activity: Killdeer and meadowlarks pose a hazard<br />

during spring and summer months. Swallows feed heavily during<br />

the morning hours in August. Large flocks of starlings occasionally<br />

transit the airfield during spring and late summer. Crows and<br />

sparrows can be found throughout the year.<br />

b. Mammal activity - Deer, fox, and coyote occasionally<br />

transit the movement areas, especially after dark.<br />

c. Bird Watch Conditions:<br />

(1) LOW - Normal bird activity on and above the airfield<br />

with a low probability of hazard.<br />

(2) MODERATE - Increased bird population in locations<br />

which represent an increased potential for strike. Requires<br />

increased vigilance by all agencies and supervisors and caution by<br />

aircrews.<br />

(3) SEVERE - High bird population on or immediately<br />

above the active runway or other specific location that represents<br />

a high potential for strike. Supervisors and aircrews must<br />

thoroughly evaluate mission need before conducting operation,<br />

in areas under condition SEVERE.<br />

d. BASH PHASES:<br />

(1) BASH Phase I - All dates not designated as Phase II.<br />

(2) BASH Phase II - In effect 15 March to 30 May and<br />

1 August to 31 October.<br />

3. CAUTION - Assault Landing Zone (ALZ) - Extensive<br />

ALZ/NVG training in effect Monday-Friday. Infrared Red (IR)<br />

Lighting placed at threshold, 500’, and at the end of each<br />

overrun. PPR required for all aircraft using ALZ except 910th<br />

AW, contact DSN 346-1069 or C330-609-1069 for PPR. Units will<br />

coordinate their request for the ALZ and will receive a<br />

procedures briefing prior to use from the 910th AW Tactics<br />

Office (DSN 346-1070 C330-609-1070).<br />

c. Arrivals - When the field is VFR, jet aircraft executing a<br />

VOR, VOR-DME, TACAN, or HI-VORTAC approach to Rwy 17 shall<br />
