The strategy will contribute to poverty alleviation, infrastructure development, job creation <strong>and</strong> theabsence of basic services.In the case of <strong>Lekwa</strong> a <strong>Co</strong>mpaction <strong>and</strong> Densification Strategy should be developed for St<strong>and</strong>erton <strong>and</strong> Sakhile. Itshould deal with new densities, mixed use nodal forming, infill development <strong>and</strong> redevelopment of lower densityareas. The strategy’s more specific objective is to:Ensure optimal <strong>and</strong> efficient use of infrastructure, services, facilities <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>.Support the development of a viable public transport system <strong>and</strong> improve levels of access, especially bythe poor, to the City’s resources <strong>and</strong> amenities.Provide a framework <strong>and</strong> guidelines for the assessment of development proposals that promotedensification.Provide homeowners <strong>and</strong> property investors with certainty regarding the areas that will be targeted forvarious types of densification.Protect, manage <strong>and</strong> enhance the natural <strong>and</strong> built environment <strong>and</strong> significant cultural l<strong>and</strong>scapes.Ensure that the scale <strong>and</strong> character (in terms of bulk, height, <strong>and</strong> architectural styling if necessary) of thehigher density areas is appropriate to the immediate context.Support the development of mixed l<strong>and</strong> uses providing for vitality, opportunities <strong>and</strong> integrated livingenvironments.<strong>Co</strong>ntribute to place-making <strong>and</strong> the development of attractive <strong>and</strong> safe urban environments9.5 LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISMSTRATEGYThe <strong>Lekwa</strong> LED <strong>and</strong> Tourism Strategy focus on aspects such as the br<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> image of the <strong>Municipality</strong> (<strong>and</strong> theurban settlements), it’s economic (re)positioning in terms of the global economy, tourism <strong>and</strong> all aspects related tothe urban space economy. The main focus of the LED should be on the following:The main focus of the LED <strong>and</strong> Tourism is on the on the following aspect as envisaged in the SDF: Promote <strong>and</strong> support sustainability of existing businesses. Promote small <strong>and</strong> micro sized rural enterprises. Tourism growth <strong>and</strong> promotion: conferencing, casino, motels game farms, natural sites ect. Creation of job opportunities. Industries to support SMME activities. Improve skills development. Increase the revenue potential of the <strong>Municipality</strong>. Develop the business potential of the area. Establish the municipality as one of preference for national <strong>and</strong> international visitors.Examples of LED initiatives are: Supporting micro enterprises; Supporting small business development; Providing skill training; Encouraging domestic or foreign investment by providing infrastructure like roads or the reduction ofcrime; Providing municipal services such as transport, education or regulations which support local economicdevelopment.There is no single solution to LED that will work in every local area.
