Principal emphasis is placed on the fact that housing is not a shelterissue alone but also an important economic asset. It is evident that more funds must be sourced towards theeradication of informal settlement in Lekwa Municipality.d) Rural HouseholdsThe rural housing programme seeks to tackle the shelter needs of rural dwellers. This programme also enablesfemale beneficiaries to access housing on their own rights. The IDP has identified 2 840 inadequate householdsfrom traditional housing.e) Farming worker housingLast year the Mpumalanga Department of Housing had planned to build 444 units under the farm workerhousing programme. It had not, however, anticipated the number of challenges that would be encountered.Farm worker housing development has proven to be a lengthy process largely regarding land andenvironmental impact assessment issues.Lekwa Municipality has a target objective of 44 farming worker housing. The Department of Local Governmentand Housing has allocated R1, 425,630 which will address the 44 farming workers housing in the 2008/2009financial year.According to the Informal Settlement Report dated 29 October 2009 the status of the informal settlements inStanderton are outlined in the table below. This differs from the figures in the LLM Housing Chapter.
