“To be the leading, people centered municipality excelling in economic growth, development <strong>and</strong> governance”The R23 <strong>and</strong> R35 were identified as key economic corridors on district level <strong>and</strong> the R546 between St<strong>and</strong>erton<strong>and</strong> the TEKS area as well as the R39 between Morgenzon <strong>and</strong> Ermelo was identified on local level, due to theimportant economic nodes that they connect.Apart from this main road network an expansive network of secondary gravel roads traverses the municipalarea, providing accessibility at the most local level.No new roads are being planned in the area.There are several freight routes traversing the district. These are used to transport:’• <strong>Co</strong>al to power stations that are inadequately served by rail freight services;• Fuel <strong>and</strong> chemicals from the large manufacturing plants in the Secunda area;• Maize from farms to silos;• Grain to mills <strong>and</strong> animal feed factories; <strong>and</strong>• A wide range of products such as animal feeds, wholesale <strong>and</strong> retail goods, steel, buildingsupplies <strong>and</strong> fertiliser.The following roads were indicated by the GSDM ITP (2008) as important freight routes:• The R35 between Bethal <strong>and</strong> Amersfoort via Morgenzon;• The R23 between St<strong>and</strong>erton <strong>and</strong> Volksrust; <strong>and</strong>• The R38 between St<strong>and</strong>erton <strong>and</strong> Bethal.• The R50 between Le<strong>and</strong>ra <strong>and</strong> St<strong>and</strong>erton.Figure 17: Road NetworksSeveral stretches of the road within the <strong>Municipality</strong> are either in a poor or very poor state.
