The following aspects areaddressed:• Hydrology;• Biodiversity;• <strong>Co</strong>nservation areas;• Topography; <strong>and</strong>• Agricultural soil potential.Topography <strong>and</strong> HydrologyThe hydrological system of the <strong>Lekwa</strong> LM is of critical importance. Although it makes up only 1.5% 2 of the totalmunicipal area, it includes a number of important rivers <strong>and</strong> dams.The most important river in the municipality, the Vaal River, flows in a westerly direction through St<strong>and</strong>erton.Other rivers include the Waterval River to the west of the Municipal Area <strong>and</strong> the Klip River, which forms partof the southern municipal boundary between <strong>Lekwa</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Free State before its confluence with the Vaal.The LLM also comprises of a number of smaller watercourses: Boesmanspruit, Rietspruit, Leeuspruit,Blesbokspruit, Osspruit, Geelklipspruit, Kafferspruit, Kaalspruit, Diepspruit, Leeuspruit, Katbosspruit <strong>and</strong>Brakspruit. The rivers <strong>and</strong> watercourses within the municipality all flow into the Vaal River (<strong>Lekwa</strong> EMF, 2009).The Grootdraai Dam, situated upstream of St<strong>and</strong>erton is a major impoundment within the upper Vaal system,<strong>and</strong> is primarily used for flow attenuation <strong>and</strong> water supply. The Grootdraai Dam was completed in 1982 <strong>and</strong>is the tenth largest dam in South Africa.Both pans <strong>and</strong> palustrine (marsh/ vlei) wetl<strong>and</strong>s occur in the municipality <strong>and</strong> several non-perennial <strong>and</strong>perennial pans are scattered throughout the municipal area due to its relatively flat topography.54 | P a g e - D r a f t i n t e g r a t e d D e v e l o p m e n t P l a n 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4
