~~84 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSEXHAUST SYSTEMThe basic exhaust system on all vehicles consists of anexhaust manifold, front exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, heat shield(s), muffler and tailpipe (Figure 2-86).Vehicles with the 2.5L engine use a single muffler exhaustsystem with a single, monolithic-type catalytic converter. The exhaust system must be properly aligned to preventstress, leakage, and body contact. If the system contacts anybody panel, it may amplify objectionable noises originatingfrom the engine or body. When inspecting an exhaust system, critical items toinspect for are cracked or loose joints, stripped screw orbolt threads, corrosion damage, and worn, cracked orbroken hangers. Replace all components that are badlycorroded or damaged. DO NOT attempt to repair. Whenreplacement is required, use original equipment parts (ortheir equivalent). This will assure proper alignment andprovide acceptable exhaust noise levels. All exhaust systems should be checked for leaks. A leak inthe exhaust system is unsafe and will cost you power.Caution: Avoid application of rust prevention compoundsor undercoating materials to exhaust system floor pan heatshields. Light overspray near the edges is permitted.Application of coating will result in excessive floor pantemperatures and objectionable fumes.Exhaust SystemIntake/Exhaust Manifold Attaching PackagePackage of factory original nuts and bolts to attach intakeand exhaust manifolds. Includes five bolts, seven washers, four studs, two pins, two spacers, and three plugs. This gasket is designed for originalreplacement. For Jeep 2.5L engine only.P452’9663 Intake/Exhaust manifold gasket.Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)To assist in the control of oxides of nitrogen (NO,) inengine exhaust, all engines are equipped with an exhaustgas recirculation (EGR) system (Figure 2-87). The use ofgas to dilute incoming aidfuel mixtures lowers peak flametemperature during combustion, thus limiting theformation of NOx.Exhaust gases are taken from openings in the exhaust gascrossover passage in the intake manifold. Refer to theservice manual for a complete description, diagnosis andproper service procedures.HEAT SHIELDDOWNPIPEHEAT SHIELD(BOllOM)figure 2 - 86Figure 2 - 87
