360 AMC V-8 (IGNITION SYSTEM) 433VOLTAGE REGULATORSFor standard or dual purpose use, the original voltageregulator should work fine. However, if your engine is arace-only piece, a constant output voltage regulator shouldbe used.Caution: Using a constant output voltage regulator on avehicle intended for standard or dual purpose applicationcan overcharge the battery and cause an electrical failure.IGNITION SYSTEM TIMINGA graduated timing degree scale located on the timing casecover is used for reference when timing the ignition system.A milled index notch in the vibration damper is used toalign the No. 1 cylinder ignition position of the crankshaftwith the correct timing degree mark on the graduated scale.Magnetic Timing ProbeWith both engines, a magnetic timing probe socket isprovided integral with the timing degree scale for use witha special magnetic timing probe. This special probe detects the milled notch on the vibrationdamper. The probe is inserted through the probe socketuntil it contacts the vibration damper. Ignition timing canthen be obtained from a meter or computer printout, depending on the type of equipment being used. The probe socket is located at 9.5" after TDC, and theequipment is calibrated to compensate for this location.DO NOT use the timing probe socket as a reference to checkthe ignition timing when using a conventional timing light.Ignition Timing ProcedureThe ignition timing can be adjusted according to thefollowing primary timing procedure.1. Set parking brake. Shift transmission to PARK.2. Run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.3.Ensure that AIC is turned OFF, if equipped.4. With the ignition switch OFF, connect an ignition timinglight and a calibrated, expanded scale tachometer.5. Disconnect and plug the distributor vacuum advance hose.6. Loosen distributor hold down bolt to allow adjustment.Warning! Use extreme caution when the engine isoperating. DO NOT stand in a direct line with the fan. DONOT put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. DO NOTwear loose clothing.7. Start the engine.8. With the engine at idle speed, check and adjust (ifnecessary) the timing according to the specificationlisted on the Emission Control lnformation labellocated in the engine compartment.9. Tighten the distributor hold-down clamp and verifythat the ignition timing is correct.10. Turn the engine OFF and remove the timing lightand tachometer.11. Connect the hose to the distributor vacuumadvance mechanism.MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS ELECTRONICIGNITION COMPONENTS~~ ~High Performance Electronic Control UnitsFor a hotter spark and more rpm capability, use one of Mop=Performance Parts' high performance ECUs. For generalhigh performance and usage up through 6,000 rpm, use theOrange Box ECU. For higher rpm output requirements upthrough 8,000, select the Chrome Box ECU.P4 120505 Orange Box ECU.P4120534Chrome Box ECU.Super Gold Electronic Control UnitThe Super Gold Electronic Control Unit is the culminationof eight years of high performance ignition systemsdevelopment. Designed to out perform any ignition unitpreviously offered to Mopar racers, it will handle the highcurrent demand by the P3690560 (Accel) highperformance coil, while keeping dwell variation to lessthan 1" from 1,000 to 10,000 rpm. Dwell is set formaximum spark output at low and high engine speeds. The Super Gold ECU provides outstanding performancefrom idle to 12,000 rpm.P4 120600Super Gold ECU -race only.Ballast Resistor - Electronic DistributorP2444641 Use with mechanical advance distributorusing P3690560 coil. 1/4 Ohm.P5206436 Use with electronic ignition systemsusing P4120505 Orange Box ECU andproduction coil, or with P4120889 coil.1 Ohm.l- -'T 1
