4.2L IN-LINE 6 (OILING SYSTEM) 31 1Caution: DO NOT disturb the position of the oil inlet tubeand strainer assembly in the pump body. If the tube is movedwithin the pump body, a replacement tube and strainerassembly must be installed to ensure an airtight seal.3. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts, oil pump andgasket (Figure 2-78).Gear End Clearance MeasurementRemove the cover retaining bolts and cover from the pumpbody.1. Preferred Methoda. Place a strip of Plastigauge across the full width ofeach gear (Figure 2-79).b. Install the pump cover and tighten the bolts to 8N*m (70 in-lbs) torque.c. Remove the pump cover and determine the amount ofclearance by measuring the width of compressedPlastigauge with the scale on the Plastigaugeenvelope. The correct clearance by this method is 0.05 1-0.152mm (0.002-0.006"). The preferred measurement is0.051 mm (0.002''). If the gear end clearance isexcessive, replace the oil pump assembly.2. Alternate Methoda. Place a straightedge across the ends of the gearsand the pump body (Figure 2-80).b. Select a feeler gauge that fits snugly but freelybetween the straightedge and the pump gears (Figure2-80).Using this method the correct clearance is 0.05 1-0.152mm (0.002-0.006"), with the preferred measurementbeing 0.051 mm (0.002"). If the gear end clearance isexcessive, replace the oil pump assembly.Gear-to-Body Clearance MeasurementWith both gears in place, measure the gear-to-bodyclearance by inserting a feeler gauge between the gear toothand the pump body inner wall, directly opposite the point ofgear mesh (Figure 2-81). Select a feeler gauge which fitssnugly but freely. Rotate gears to measure each tooth-tobodyclearance in this manner.Correct clearance is 0.051-0.102 mm with 0.051 mmpreferred (0.002-0.004" with 0.002" preferred). If the gear-tobodyclearance is more than specified, replace the oil pump.DisassemblyRemove the cotter pin and slide the spring retainer, springand oil pressure relief valve plunger out of the pump body.Inspect for binding condition during disassembly. Clean orreplace as necessary.Note: The oil inlet tube and strainer assembly must bemoved to allow removal of the relief valve. Install areplacement inlet tube and strainer assembly.AssemblyNote: Two relief valve plunger sizes (standard and oversize)are available. When replacing the valve, ensure that thecorrect replacement valve, standard size or 0.254 mm(O.OIOll) oversize plunger diameter, is obtained and installed.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.Install oil pressure relief valve plunger, spring, retainer, and cotter pin.If the position of the inlet tube in the pump body hasbeen disturbed, install a replacement inlet tube andstrainer assembly. Apply a light film of Permatex No. 2sealant, or equivalent, around the end of the inlet tube.Use an oil pump inlet tube installer tool to drive thetube into the body (Figure 2-82). Ensure the supportbracket is properly aligned.Install the idler gear and the drive gear assembly.Inspect the gears to ensure that a binding conditiondoes not exist before installing the oil pump.To ensure self-priming of the oil pump, fill the pumpwith petroleum jelly before installing the oil pumpcover. DO NOT use grease.Apply a bead of Loctite 515, or equivalent, and installthe pump cover.Tighten the cover bolts to 8 N*m (70 in-lbs) torque.Installation1. Install the oil pump with a replacement gasket. Tightenthe short bolts to 14 Nom (10 ft-lbs) torque and the longbolts to 23 Nom (17 ft-lbs) torque (Figure 2-78).2.3.Install the oil plan with replacement gaskets and seals.Refer to Oil Pan Installation, in this section, for theprocedure.Fill the oil pan with replacement engine oil to thespecified level.Oil Pressure Relief ValveThe oil pressure relief valve is not adjustable. A setting of75 pounds maximum pressure is built into the tension of thespring. In the relief position, the valve permits oil to by-pass througha passage in the pump body to the inlet side of the pump. The oil pump pick-up tube and screen assembly is a pressfit in the oil pump body.Caution: DO NOT disturb the position of the tubeassembly in the pump body unless absolutely necessary. In the event the tube is disturbed, it must be replaced witha new tube assembly.
