288 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSMain Bearing Journal Diameter - CrankshaftRemoved1.2.3.Clean the main bearing journal of oil.Determine the maximum diameter of the journal with amicrometer. Measure at two locations 90" apart at eachend of the journal.Compare the measured diameter with the journaldiameter specification listed in the Main Bearing FittingChart located in your service manual, and select insertsrequired to obtain the specified bearing-to-journalclearance.Installation1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Lubricate the bearing surface of each insert with engine oil.Install the main bearing upper inserts to the cylinder block.Install the lower bearing inserts into the main bearing caps.Carefully lower the crankshaft into the cylinder block.Install the main bearing caps and lower inserts.Tighten all the bolts to 54 Nom (40 ft-lbs) torque, thentighten to 95 Nom (70 ft-lbs) torque.Finally, tighten the main bearing cap bolts to 108 Nom(80 ft-lbs) torque.Rotate the crankshaft after tightening each mainbearing cap to ensure the crankshaft rotates freely.Install the oil pan with replacement gaskets and seals.Refer to the Oil Pan Installation, 'Oiling System'section of this chapter, for the procedure.IO. Tighten the drain plug securely.1 1. Lower the vehicle.12. Install the spark plugs. Tighten the plugs to 38 Nom(28 ft-lbs) torque.13. Fill the oil pan with engine oil to the full mark on thedipstick level.14. Connect the battery negative cable.Crankshaft End PlayI.2.3.4.5.Attach a magnetic base dial indicator to the cylinderblock at either the front or rear of the engine.Position the dial indicator rod so that it is parallel to thecenterline of the crankshaft.Pry the crankshaft forward, and position the dialindicator to zero.Pry the crankshaft forward and backward. Note the dialindicator readings. End play is the difference betweenthe high and low measurements. Correct end play is0.038 to 0.16.5 mm (0.0015 to 0.0065"). The desiredspecifications are 0.05 1 to 0.064 mm (0.002 to 0.0025").If end play is not within specification, inspectcrankshaft thrust faces for wear. If no wear is apparent,replace the thrust bearing and measure end play. If endplay is still not within specification, replace thecrankshaft..-
