(0.010 in.)J8909-34Figure 7 - 3The main bearing journal diameter is identified inproduction by a color-coded paint mark on the adjacentcheek toward the flanged (rear) end of the crankshaft, exceptfor the rear main journal. The paint mark that identifies therear main journal diameter is on the crankshaft rear flange.Refer to Main Bearing Fitting Chart (Figure 7-3) to selectthe proper bearing inserts to obtain the specified bearingclearance. Refer to 360 AMC V-8 Engine Specifications,'Engine Assembly' section of this chapter, for the correctmain bearing clearances. When required, use different size upper and lower bearinginserts as a pair. Use a standard size upper insert incombination with a 0.025 mm (0.001") undersize lowerinsert to reduce the clearance by 0.013 mm (0.0005").Never use bearing inserts in combination with greater than0.025 mm (0.001") difference in size.Example: When installing upper and lower inserts ofdifferent sizes, install the undersize inserts either all on thetop (upper) or all on the bottom (lower).Main Bearing-to-Journal Clearance- CrankshaftInstalled1. Support the weight of the crankshaft with a jack placedunder the counterweight adjacent to the journal beingmeasured.2.3.4.Note: Measure the clearance of one bearing at a time.ALL other bearing caps must remain tightened.Remove the main bearing cap and lower insert.Wipe the insert and the exposed portion of thecrankshaft journal clean.Place a stripe of Plastigauge across the full width of thebearing insert. The Plastigauge must not crumble. If itis brittle, obtain fresh stock.Caution: DO NOT rotate the crankshaft. The Plastigaugewill shift, resulting in an inaccurate indication.5.6.Install the bearing cap and tighten the retaining bolts to136 Nom (100 ft-lbs) torque.Remove the bearing cap and determine the amount ofclearance by measuring the width of the compressedPlastigauge with the scale on the Plastigauge envelope.Refer to 360 AMC V-8 Engine Specifications, 'EngineAssembly' section of this chapter, for the correctclearance.
