4.0L POWER TECH IN-LINE 6 (STARTING SYSTEM) 249Battery RelocationMost race vehicles begin life with the battery in theengine compartment.Mounting the battery in the trunk of a RWD race vehiclehelps by shifting weight over the drive wheels (improvingtraction) and by making the engine compartment lesscluttered. But there’s more to a trunk mounted battery kitthan just putting the battery in the trunk. Physically movingthe battery is easy. The problem is that the battery must stilloperate the engine’s ignition and fuel delivery systems, andwith the battery eight feet away from the ignition system(usually a high output electronic race unit), minimizingvoltage drop is critical.To minimize voltage drop, the Mopar Performance Partstrunk mounted battery kit (P4349500) uses #1 gauge wire,while the competition uses #4 gauge. The smaller the gaugenumber the bigger the wire size. The bigger the wire sizethe less voltage drop occurs. To provide the best electricalconductor available, Mopar Performance Parts suppliescopper wire-the competition uses aluminum. Copper is abetter electrical conductor than aluminum. The better theconductor, the less voltage drop occurs in the samedistance; that is, trunk to engine compartment. Handcrimpedterminals can lead to problems such as voltagelosses, loose connections, and so on. That’s why the MoparPerformance Parts cable has factory-installed threadedbrass terminals.Some people feel that a full length ground cable is required.This is acceptable, but it adds a lot of weight and isn’tnecessary. The engine is already grounded from the blockto the firewall of the bodylframe (unibody). Check to besure. The Mopar Performance Parts package includes aground strap to ground the battery to the frame in the trunkarea. The Mopar Performance Parts package also includesmany convenience items such as starter to relay andsolenoid wires, terminals, firewall grommets, and batterycover. Other kits don’t include these items. However, itdoes not include a battery.Trunk Mounted Battery KitThis improved kit is designed for moving the battery tothe trunk. Improves weight distribution which is soimportant for drag racers. It means less clutter in theengine compartment, and helps provide better traction. Itwill even contribute to improved braking and lessundersteer in hard turns for oval trackers and rallyers. Kitwill fit nearly any vehicle.
