4.0L POWER TECH IN-LINE 6 (EXHAUST SYSTEM) 237EXHAUST SYSTEM MODIFICATIONSUsing straight-through type mufflers and steel tubingheaders on your stock vehicle doesn't mean that you willgain horsepower. Today's car and truck exhaust systems arespecifically tuned to the engines they come with. In otherwords, the best all-around, dual purpose exhaust set-up isthe stock set-up that came with your vehicle. OK, youmight gain 5 extra horsepower by using a header and astraight-through type muffler, but the noise level, thedisturbance in engine back pressure (via the exhaustsystem) and the high cost of these performance parts do notjustify making these modifications. However, if the vehicleis to be raced and the modifications to that vehicle includea high performance camshaft and valve train set-up, then aheader and straight-through type muffler can be verybeneficial, and the cost justified.Note: All exhaust systems should be checked for leaks. Aleak in the exhaust system is unsafe and will cause you tolose power.HeadersSteel tubing headers are a very popular exhaust systemmodification.
