Cold engine, tight (new) engine, or heavy oil will increase starter amperage draw.Figure 4 - 52The starter motor is activated by an integral heavy dutystarter solenoid switch mounted to the overrunning clutchhousing. This electromechanical switch connects anddisconnects the feed of battery voltage to the starter motorand actuates a shift fork that engages and disengages thestarter pinion gear with the starter ring gear. The starter motor uses an overrunning clutch and starterpinion gear unit to engage and drive a starter ring gear thatis integral to the torque converter drive plate mounted onthe rear crankshaft flange.STARTER RELAYThe starter relay is an electromechanical device thatswitches battery current to the pull-in coil of the startersolenoid when the ignition switch is turned to the Startposition. The starter relay is located in the PowerDistribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment. Seethe fuse and relay layout label affixed to the inside surfaceof the PDC cover for starter relay identification andlocation. The starter relay cannot be repaired or adjustedand, if faulty or damaged, it must be replaced.BATTERYIt is very important that the battery be fully charged inracing applications with an electronic ignition. A volt metershould be used to check the battery voltage before thevehicle is raced. The voltage should not be allowed to dropbelow 12.0 volts. Lower voltage will cause poor ignitionperformance such as misfires and will result in slowing thevehicle down. It may also cut down on the electric fuelpump’s efficiency.Brass Battery TerminalsHere’s a variety of brass terminals in different styles thatoffer maximum conductivity.
