An Arkansas smoothstone should be used toremove nicks and high spots. Replace valvesdisplaying any damage.CONICALVALVESPRINGValve Refacing1. Use a valve refacing machine to reface the intake andexhaust valves to the specified angle. After refacing, atleast a 0.787 mm (1/32") margin must remain (Figure2-64). If not, replace the valve.2.The valve stem tip can be resurfaced and rechamberedwhen worn. DO NOT remove more than 0.25 mm(0.010").VALVE MARGINFigure 2 - 65J9009-17VALVE SPRINGTESTER TOOLVALVE SPRINGCORRECT VALVE FACINGNO MARGINJ9009-18Figure 2 - 66INCORRECT VALWE FACINGFigure 2 - 64Valve Spring Tension TestJ9009-69The 2SL engines use a conical valve spring (Figure 2-65).Use a valve spring tester and a torque wrench (Figure 2-66)to test each valve spring for the specified tension value.(Refer to 2.5L Engine Specifications, 'Engine Assembly'section of this chapter, for valve spring tension values.)Replace valve springs that are not within specification.Installation - Cylinder Head RemovedInstall replacement valve stem oil seals over the valvestems and onto the valve guide boss.Note: If valves with 0.381 mm (0.015") oversizestems are used, oversize oil seals are required.Position the valve spring and retainer on the cylinderhead and compress the valve spring with valve springcompressor tool (Figure 2-61). Install valve locks andrelease the tool.Lightly tap the valve spring from side-to-side with arubber hammer to ensure the spring is properly seatedon the cylinder head.Install the cylinder head to the cylinder block (refer toCylinder Head Installation, 'Cylinder Head' section ofthis chapter, for the procedure).1.2.Thoroughly clean the valve stems and valve guide bores.Lightly lubricate the stem and install the valve in theoriginal valve guide bore.....T - 1 1
