384 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSTIMING CASE COVERThe timing case cover is die-cast aluminum (Figure 7-6). Acrankshaft oil seal is used to prevent oil leakage at thevibration damper hub. The oil seal may be installed fromeither side of the timing case cover. If the engine has been recently operated, use careto prevent scalding by hot coolant. The system is pressurized.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10. Remove the distributor.11.12.Drain the radiator and cylinder block. If the coolant isreusable, drain it into a clean container.Disconnect the radiator hoses and bypass hose.Remove all drive belts.Remove the fan and hub assembly.Remove the A/C compressor and bracket assemblyfrom the engine and move aside. DO NOT disconnectthe air conditioner hoses.Remove the alternator, alternator mounting bracket andback idler pulley.Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump.Remove the power steering pump and bracketassembly. Remove the air pump and mounting bracketas an assembly. DO NOT disconnect the powersteering pump hoses.Remove the distributor cap. Note the rotor andhousing position.Remove the fuel pump.Remove the vibration damper pulley.13. Remove the vibration damper.14. Remove the two front oil pan bolts.15. Remove the bolts that secure the timing case cover to theengine block. The cover retaining bolts are various lengthsand must be installed in the same location as removed.16. Remove the cover by pulling it forward until it is clearof the locating dowel pins.17. Clean the gasket contact surface of the cover.18. Remove the oil seal. Always replace the oil sealwhenever the timing case cover is removed. Refer toOil Seal Replacement, in this section, for the procedure.Oil Seal Replacement1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Loosen all the drive belts.Remove the vibration damper pulley.Remove the vibration damper bolt and washer.Install the damper bolt in the crankshaft to preventthe damper puller from damaging the bolt threads inthe crankshaft.Remove the vibration damper. Remove the damper bolt.Remove the oil seal (Figure 7-7).Wipe the crankshaft sealing area clean.Apply Permatex No. 2, or equivalent, to the outer metalsurface of the replacement seal.Install the seal using installer tool (Figure 7-8).10. Apply a light coating of engine oil to the seal contactsurface of the damper.11. Install the damper, flat washer and bolt. Tighten thedamper bolt to 122 Nom (90 ft-lbs) torque.12. Install the pulley and belts. Adjust belts tospecification. Refer to the proper service manual forthe procedure.IFigure 7 - 7-- ..r --r I
