296 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSPiston Ring Fitting1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Carefully clean the carbon from all ring grooves. Oildrain openings in the oil ring grooves and pin bossmust be clear. DO NOT remove metal from thegrooves or lands. This will change ring-to-grooveclearances and will damage the ring-to-land seating.Measure the ring side clearance with a feeler gaugefitted snugly between the ring land and ring (Figure 5-4). Rotate the ring in the groove. It must move freelyaround the circumference of the groove.Place ring in the cylinder bore and push down withinverted piston to position near lower end of the ringtravel. Measure ring gap with a feeler gauge fittingsnugly between ring ends. The correct compressionring end gap is 0.25-0.51 mm (0.010-0.02011). Thecorrect oil control ring end gap is 0.381-1.397 mm(0.015-0.055").Refer to Figure 2-44 for position of the ring gaps wheninstalling piston rings.Install the oil control rings according to instructions inthe package. It is not necessary to use a tool to installthe upper and lower rails. Insert expander ring first, then side rails. The two compression rings are different and cannot beinterchanged. The top ring is a moly ring (the scrapingedge is gray in color). The second ring is a black castiron ring (the scraping edge is black in color when new). The compression rings can be identified by a chamferof either the top or bottom inside edge. The rings mayalso be identified by one or two dots on the top surfaceof the ring. The second compression ring (black cast iron) has achamfer on the BOTTOM of the inside edge. This ringmay also have two dots located on the top surface.Using a ring installer, install the ring with the chamferfacing down. If the ring has dots, the dots will befacing up.10. The top compression ring (the scraping edge is gray incolor) has a chamfer on the TOP of the inside edge. This ring may also have one dot located on the topsurface.11. Using a ring installer, install the top ring with thechamfer facing up. If the ring has a dot, the dot will befacing up.12. Position the ring end gaps on the piston as shown(Figure 2-44).LMillim.t.rrInchesNo. 1 Compression 0.030-0.081 0.0012-0.0032(0.043 Preferred) (0.0017 Preferred)No. 2 Compression0.030-0.081 0.0012-0.0032(0.043 Preferred) (0.0017 Preferred)Oil Control 0.025-0.203 0.001-0.008(0.08 Preferred) 10.003 Preferred)PISTON PINRemovalFigure 5 - 4. -ELERGAUGEPiston pins are press-fit into the connecting rods andrequire no locking device.1. Position the piston and connecting rod assembly on anarbor press.2.Apply force to a piloted driver and press the pincompletely out of the connecting rod and pistonassembly. Note position of the pin through the gaugewindow of removal support tool.Inspection1. Inspect the new piston pin and the connecting rod pinbore for nicks and burrs. Remove as necessary. Neverreuse a piston pin.2.3.4.With the pin removed from the piston and connectingrod, clean and dry piston pin bore and the replacementpiston pin.Position the piston so that the pin bore is in a verticalposition. Insert the pin in the bore. At roomtemperature, the replacement pin should slidecompletely through the pin bore in the piston by forceof gravity.Replace piston if pin jams in the pin bore.
